  • Publication number: 20030074910
Abstract: A system for controlling the starting of an air conditioner includes a compressor controlled in a pulse width modulation according to a duty cycle control signal, an electronic expansion valve for expanding refrigerant compressed in the compressor, a high pressure conduit connecting the exit side of the compressor and the inlet side of the electronic expansion valve, a low pressure conduit connecting the exit side of the electronic expansion valve and the inlet side of the compressor, a bypass conduit connected at its first end to the high pressure conduit and at its second end to the low pressure conduit, and a flow rate regulating valve mounted on the bypass conduit for regulating a flow rate of fluid flowing through the bypass conduit. A control unit controls the compressor during the starting of the compressor in such a way that the electronic expansion valve is open, the flow rate regulating valve is open and a duty control signal shorter than a duty control signal during a normal operation is generated.

  • Publication number: 20030070441
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system and method for controlling the degree of superheat of an air conditioner. The air conditioner includes a compressor controlled in a pulse width modulation manner according to duty control signals, a condenser, an electronic expansion valve and an evaporator so as to form a refrigeration cycle. An entrance temperature sensor situated at the entrance of the evaporator and an exit temperature sensor situated at the exit of the evaporator are connected to a control unit. The control unit calculates the degree of superheat of the evaporator using the difference between mean entrance and exit temperatures of the evaporator sensed by the entrance temperature sensor and the exit temperature sensor for a period of time corresponding to a duty cycle period of the compressor, and regulates the opening of the electronic expansion valve according to the calculated degree of superheat.

  • Patent number: 6519958
Abstract: A system includes a compressor and an expansion valve. The exit side of the compressor and the inlet side of the expansion valve are connected by a high pressure conduit, and the exit side of the expansion valve and the inlet side of the compressor are connected by a low pressure conduit. A bypass conduit is connected to the high pressure conduit and the low pressure conduit and a flow rate regulating valve is mounted on the bypass conduit. A control unit controls the expansion valve and the flow rate regulating valve to perform two starting operations in such a way that the flow rate regulating valve is open and the expansion valve is closed in a first starting operation, and the flow rate regulating valve is closed and the electronic expansion valve is open to a predetermined extent in a second starting operation. The compressor is controlled by a duty control signal having a period shorter than a period during a normal operation for starting operations.

  • Patent number: 5921094
Abstract: A method of sensing condensed water of an air conditioner which is driven by a compressor motor's operation through a motor driving portion, to heat-exchange the inside, comprises the steps of--sensing temperature by means of a temperature sensor mounted within a condensed water bucket, before comparing it with a predetermined temperature set in a control portion, during the operation of the air conditioner; driving the motor driving portion in order to operate the compressor motor until the room temperature detected by the temperature sensor reaches the temperature set by a user, if the indoor temperature is above the temperature already set; and stopping the motor driving portion in order to halt the operation of the compressor motor, deciding that condensed water collects in the condensed water bucket, and displaying an error message through a display as well as generating an alarm sound through an alarm sound generating portion, if the room temperature is below the temperature already set.

  • Patent number: 5850742
Abstract: An air conditioner includes an inlet for receiving room air, a heat exchanger for heating or cooling the air, an outlet for discharging the heated or cooled air back into the room, a fan for circulating the air through the air conditioner, inlet and outlet doors for opening/closing the inlet and outlet, a motor for driving the doors, and a controller for automatically actuating the motor to open the doors when the air conditioner is activated, and close the doors when the air conditioner is deactivated. A control by-pass is provided in a remote controller which is relatively inaccessible to a normal user but which can be actuated by an air conditioner tester or shipper for maintaining the doors open even when the air conditioner is deactivated (e.g., during testing or shipping) to prevent the doors from being damaged.
