    Abstract: An ammonium salt of the reaction product, in an aqueous medium, of a hydrolyzed styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer and a dispersed hydroxy-alkyl modified starch, is used as a component of a binder composition for coating materials. Film-forming coating compositions comprise, as a binder, said reaction product and an elastomeric or resin latex, and further comprise a paper coating pigment, and barium carbonate and ammonium bicarbonate as scavenging agents. Additionally, said compositions may comprise up to about 25%, by weight of the binder, of ammonium zirconyl carbonate.
