To activate the system, a user opens a gate valve via the valve stem, thereby allowing water to enter the upper barrel of the fire hydrant. When the gate valve is closed, a drain valve allows water to exit the upper barrel, lower barrel, and shoe fitting, preventing damage during freezing temperatures.
