    Abstract: A device for lifting oversized pieces of material. The device includes a spreader bar capable of attaching to a lifting vehicle. At least two cross members are attached to the spreader bar along with at least one cross-member power source. The at least one cross-member power source is connected to at least one drive mechanism which in turn is connected to at least one of the at least two cross members. A load-pick power source is attached to each of the at least two cross members and well as to at least one load-pick drive mechanism. The at least one load-pick drive mechanism is connected to each of the at least two load pick points, and the cross-member and the load-pick power sources are each electrically connected to an operating or control panel in a cab of the lifting vehicle.

    Abstract: A sway dampener is provided for reducing sway motion of a gantry crane spreader that is suspended from hanger chains. The sway dampener is configured to resist motion of the hanger chain relative to the spreader, thereby retarding sway. The dampener includes first and second portions that are movable relative to each other in a resistive fashion, for example a piston-cylinder structure. The first portion is mounted to the spreader and the second portion is mounted to the hanger chain at an attachment point located a vertical distance above a point at which the hanger chain is pivotally mounted to the spreader so that horizontal sway motion of the attachment point relative to the spreader displaces the first and second portions.

    Abstract: A gantry crane including a lifting grappler is provided with a hoist locking mechanism to prevent undesired downward drifting of the grappler, especially during periods when the crane is parked and not in operation. The hoist locking device can selectively secure the grappler in a raised position, maintaining a maximum clearance under the raised grappler. The crane includes a hoist line, such as a chain or cable, that suspendably supports the weight of the grappler, and a hoist actuator for moving the hoist line, thereby lifting or lowering the grappler. In an embodiment, the hoist locking device is selectively operable to secure the hoist line in a predetermined position, preventing the grappler from lowering. For example, an embodiment of the hoist locking device includes a hook-shaped latch member movably mounted to the frame for engagement with a catch member fixed relative to the hoist line. The catch member may, for example, be a projection from a clevis mounted to the hoist actuator.

    Abstract: A steering apparatus and method are provided for a gantry crane with four corner-mounted wheel assemblies having steerable wheels. The crane is a type which drivable in either longitudinal or transverse directions, wherein steering control is automatically switched steering control to the “leading” wheels, or more particularly the wheels of the “leading” pair of wheel assemblies. The system detects which two of the wheel assemblies are leading, whether the crane is moving longitudinally frontwardly or rearwardly, or transversly rightward or leftward. The system includes a steering controller which controls steering actuators in such a manner that the wheels of the then-leading wheel assemblies are moved according to steering control input, while the wheels of a remaining pair of then-“trailing” wheel assemblies are moved to and/or held in, a straight alignment.

    Abstract: A sway stabilizing system is provided for stabilizing sway of a grappler suspended by vertically movable hoisting cables on a gantry crane. The crane is a type which is particularly useful for lifting a standard container from a standard-height chassis, such as a standard road trailer. According to the invention, the system is designed to optimally dampen sway when the grappler is slightly higher than the top of a standard container resting on a standard chassis. More particularly, in order to cancel pendulum sway effect, the sway stabilizing system provides first and second anti-sway cables which are operably guided from the grappler to an overhead trolley of the crane in a longitudinally diagonal manner. The anti-sway cables are acted upon by respective hydraulic cylinder assemblies mounted on the grappler to apply appropriate tension in the respective anti-sway cables. The cylinder assemblies act in opposite directions to dampen grappler sway in both directions along a longitudinal axis.

The hoist, bridge and drive components are driven by an AC motor that is powered by an AC generator. The AC motor in turn operates a variable displacement hydraulic pump which is variable from zero to a maximum flow rate in either direction for infinite speed control. The output of the hydraulic pumps is directed to respective hydraulic motors which drive the particular function being controlled.

The bridge is capable of undergoing limited differential rotational motion with respect to the trolley and parallel tracks. The rotational mounting of the bridge permits the trolley wheels to maintain proper alignment with the beams while the grappler handles containers lying at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the crane.

    Abstract: A tracked crane for hoisting and moving large objects in which the tracks are preferably pivotally mounted so that they may be elevated by jacks and horizontally pivoted into another direction. Following this, the crane can be driven in the other direction without turning. The crane may also have pivotally mounted pressure cylinder lifting means, and apparatus for pressing the top of the load carried by the crane to prevent bouncing of the load as the crane travels, and to hold it down during its installation as necessary.
