    Abstract: One embodiment of the system described herein facilitates a virtualized heterogeneous disk that supports differentiated storage service qualities. During operation, the system mounts a plurality of partitions of a heterogeneous disk at different mount points, each mount point corresponding to a level of quality of service (QoS). The system then receives a write command and identifies a QoS level indication associated with the write command. Subsequently, the system selects a partition on the heterogeneous disk with performance parameters matching the identified QoS level and writes data to the selected partition. The heterogeneous disk is an abstraction of a plurality of virtualized storage devices. Furthermore, the heterogeneous disk has a single block address space, and the virtualized storage devices are allowed to have differentiated performance parameters, thereby facilitating differentiated QoS levels in the heterogeneous disk.

    Abstract: Recovery of a failed storage device of a RAID array to a replacement storage device is improved by initiating recovery before failure of the storage device occurs. If failure occurs before completing the transfer of all information from the failed storage device to the replacement storage device, then the RAID controller identifies untransferred information to recreate the failed storage device at the replacement storage device by re-building only the untransferred information with a parity operation using information stored at the array.

    Abstract: Disclosed are methods of selectively delivering a medicant to an abnormal brain region and/or to a malignant tumor in a mammalian subject, including a human. A medicant is administered simultaneously or substantially simultaneously with a potassium channel agonist (other than bradykinin or a bradykinin analog), such as NS-1619,1-EBIO, a guanylyl cyclase activator, a guanylyl cyclase activating protein, minoxidil, pinacidil, cromakalim, or levcromakalim, whereby the medicant is delivered selectively to the cells of the abnormal brain region and/or to the tumor, compared to normal tissues. Thus, among the disclosures is a method of treating a malignant tumor in a human subject. Also disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions that combine a potassium channel agonist together with a medicant and a kit for enhancing the delivery of a medicant to an abnormal brain region and/or to a malignant tumor.
