A pivot of a document table 2 and a hinge 7 is configured by two pivots A1, A2, and a constricted portion 1b and it is configured in such a manner that, in case of setting a document with a smaller size than that of the document table 2, the pivot A2 is pivoted at a convex portion 7a of the hinge 7, and in case of setting a document with a larger size than that of the document table 2, the convex portion 7a is moved to the pivot A1 side through the constricted portion 1b, and the pivot A1 is pivoted at the convex portion 7a.

    Abstract: An image reading apparatus enabling a user to flexibly select one of plural reading modes, for example, for continuously reading two-sided images of stacked document sheets or reading pages of a book or a large document exceeding a platen. In a first reading mode, a reading unit scans a document and reads a document image. In a second reading mode, a stationary reading unit and the reading unit read an image of a document fed from a document feeder section. The reading unit is provided in a flatbed reading section which is detachable from an apparatus body. The flatbed reading section, when detached from the apparatus body, can be used as a flatbed scanner.

In addition, an illuminating unit is provided for pressing the transmitting original positioned by the through-hole of the original holder, and includes a plane light source for illuminating the transmitting original, a fitting portion for fitting in the through-hole, and a protruding portion protruding toward a direction along the surface of the transmitting original from a surface of the illumination unit. The protruding portion contacts with an upper surface of the transmitting original holder when the fitting portion fits and thus the transmitting original is pressed.
