  • Publication number: 20070155395
Abstract: A scheduling strategy utilizes a total call load metric in place of a reverse signal strength indicator metric for managing reverse link resources. In a disclosed example, a load control module (40) measures the reverse signal strength indicator (62) and measures an active call load (64) using known techniques. A relationship between the reverse signal strength indicator, the active cell load, an other cell load component and a jammer component provides the ability to determine the other cell load component and the jammer component. Once the other cell load component has been determined, a total call load based upon the active cell load component and the other cell load component provides a useful metric for allocating reverse link resources between existing users and for determining whether to allow a new user, for example. In a disclosed example, the total call load at a time for scheduled transmission is estimated based upon recently measured values.

  • Patent number: 7227851
Abstract: A transport channel multiplexing system provides improved use of wireless resources in a shared data channel system. For example, the transport channel system reduces the amount of transport format information required for using a shared data channel, such as the actual number of packet data units in a transport channel of the shared data channel. Additionally, by scheduling or multiplexing coded sub-blocks from one or more transport channels over the shared data channel, the transport channel multiplexing system can provide improved integration with other important features, such as incremental redundancy, fast adaptation to channel conditions and transport channel dependent quality of service (QOS) control, to provide improved system performance.

  • Patent number: 7023899
Abstract: A method for reliably transmitting signaling information is provided. One type of signaling information is transmitted over a primary control channel. The signaling information that is to be transmitted over the primary control channel is defined as a set of particular information. Other signaling information are conveyed over a secondary control channel. Prior to transmission, the information to be conveyed over the secondary channel is scrambled in accordance with a particular scrambling procedure that indicates the information that is to be sent over the primary control channel. The scrambling is thus used to encode the information content of the primary control channel into the information of the secondary control channel thereby further protecting the integrity of the information being conveyed over both control channels.

  • Patent number: 7009949
Abstract: A rate feedback and adaptation scheme or system uses a rate of rate feedback asymmetrical with the rate of data rate adaptation. In particular, the rate adaptation system provides a rate of rate feedback slower than the rate of rate adaptation. Thus, by allowing the base station to change the data rate more frequently than the individual wireless units reports the rate information, the rate adaptation system can provide improved flexibility and more efficient use of wireless resources while reducing the processing and transmission overhead required to report the rate information. For example, every 3 slots, a wireless unit can calculate and report a rate for the wireless unit to use on a shared channel to send data. The base station receives the rates from the wireless units seeking to send data over the shared channel and selects a wireless unit to use the shared channel.

  • Patent number: 6987729
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for dynamically controlling a high speed wireless communication system to optimize utilization of system resources and increase system throughput. The invention operates to determine an allocation of wireless transmission resources to each user application served by the wireless system in a manner to optimize transmission resources while meeting required QoS criteria for the served user application. After all user applications have been provided a transmission resource allocation in this manner, the total transmission resources so allocated are determined and compared with a ceiling transmission resource level for the wireless system. A portion of the difference between the ceiling and currently allocated transmission resource levels is then made available, according to the invention, to the served user applications in proportion to the initial allocation provided each user application.

  • Publication number: 20050182994
Abstract: A method is provided to accurately predict the probability of successfully recovering frames of (coded) information received over a wireless link, without having to decode the frame. This method, which consists of three steps, requires only limited information about the received signals and the forward error correction code and retransmission scheme being used. First, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of each of the received signals is measured, where the average SNR is determined for multiple segments that together constitute the frame. Next, an algorithm is employed that takes these SNR values as inputs and determines the so-called effective SNR. The algorithm translates the measured SNR values using an appropriate convex metric, and subsequently combines the resulting values, thereby factoring in the effects of fading, multi-path, and other signal degradations.

  • Patent number: 6930981
Abstract: Data rate determination is provided in a system where the available power fraction and available Walsh codes in each active leg are dynamically changing over time. This method adapts the rate (modulation and coding) based on the combined resource (power & code space) levels seen at each cell. The method results in maximization of the rate supportable by each cell given their resource constrained situation while meeting the constraints of target packet or frame error rate and orthogonality. Furthermore, improved fast cell selection by the mobile results due to this approach that is based on knowledge of combined resource (power & code space) levels across the cells in the active set.

  • Patent number: 6859446
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of integrating voice and data services onto a same frequency channel using available transmit power information to determine data rates, wherein the available transmit power information indicates an amount of transmit power available for future data transmissions over one or more data channels. In a “distributed” embodiment, a transmitter or base station transmits, via a forward link, an available power message to a receiver or mobile-telephone indicating an amount of available transmit power at some future time t+z. The mobile-telephone performs signal-to-interference measurements corresponding to the received forward link and received interference, and uses such signal-to-interference measurements and the available power message to determine a data rate that can be supported by the mobile-telephone. Preferably, the determined data rate corresponds to a maximum data rate at which a minimum level of quality of service can be achieved at the mobile-telephone.

  • Patent number: 6836666
Abstract: Efficient data communication in wireless communication system is provided by using centralized control of data communications, such as packet switched services, over the uplink channel (mobile station (MS) to base station (BS)). A multiple access protocol is used where packet data mobile stations make requests for uplink channel resources. The request messages transmitted by the MSs inform the BS of service parameters. Examples of such service parameters are available transmit power at the MS, the amount of data to transmit and Quality of Service (QoS). The BS then processes the received request messages and performs interference management calculations to determine the portion of the BS's receive power budget that can be allocated to the data user requesting service. These calculations are used to control the amount of interference seen at the base station, to assign a data rate to the user and to aid scheduling algorithms in computing service order priorities.
