  • Patent number: 8424907
Abstract: An airbag is provided with a vent hole and a patch closing the vent hole. The airbag has a conically-shaped protrusion with the front narrowed when inflation is finished. The vent hole and patch are at the vehicle body side wall of the protrusion. The airbag has the reaction force-receiving contact portion that is partially recessed toward an occupant by receiving a reaction force substantially opposite to the approach direction of the occupant from the reaction force-applying support portion of the vehicle body structure when the occupant is cushioned, at the vehicle body side wall of the protrusion. The patch is positioned where the vent hole can keep closed when the airbag finishes inflating. The patch is not pressed against the reaction force-applying support portion but is spaced from the circumferential edge portion of the vent hole that moves when the reaction force-receiving contact portion is recessed.

  • Patent number: 8414023
Abstract: An airbag includes a tuck that is formed by tucking a part of the outer circumferential wall toward an interior of the airbag. The tuck includes two opposing walls, a turn-round region that forms a bottom of the tuck and outermost ends of the opposing walls adjacent to and continuing to an outer surface of the airbag. The airbag further includes a temporary joint that joins the opposing walls of the tuck together in such a manner as to disjoint when an inner pressure of the airbag at inflation is increased. The temporary joint is formed into such a line that extends toward the turn-round region and has a first end proximate the outermost ends and a second end in the vicinity of the turn-round region.

  • Patent number: 8015906
Abstract: An actuator includes a piston having an actuating pin, a squib, and a cylinder case. The cylinder case has a peripheral wall part that covers the circumference of the piston and a ceiling wall part having a through hole which allows an actuating pin to protrude from the through hole. The actuator is configured to make the a piston move backward along with the actuating pin by ejecting a driving gas generated from the squib to a space between the ceiling wall part and the piston during actuation. A sealing ring which is relatively movable with respect to the actuating pin while maintaining the state of sealing up a gap between the actuating pin and the through hole, is provided at an inner face side of the ceiling wall part.

  • Patent number: 7614656
Abstract: The airbag apparatus includes an airbag having a tether including an occupant side tether belt and a vehicle body side tether belt. An intermediate portion of the vehicle body side tether belt is held at the side of a housing of the airbag by a retaining mechanism. At full inflation of the airbag, the clearance between the side of the housing and the occupant side tether belt is reduced when the vehicle body side belt is retained by the retaining mechanism whereas the clearance is enlarged when the vehicle body side tether belt is released from the retaining mechanism. The occupant side tether belt and the vehicle body side tether belt are linked with each other so that a central area of a protection plane of an occupant side wall of the airbag in the former case is generally parallel to the central area in the latter.

  • Patent number: 7600782
Abstract: The airbag apparatus includes an airbag having an exhaust hole for discharging part of inflation gas, an open/close controller for controlling opening and closing operations of the exhaust hole, and a flap element releasably joined to the open/close controller and being joined to a periphery of the exhaust hole in an outer side of the airbag which periphery is in a side facing away from the open/close controller, for opening and closing the exhaust hole. The apparatus further includes an open/close means arranged in the periphery of the exhaust hole. Upon airbag inflation, if the flap element is retained by the open/close controller, the open/close means is held down at its outer side by the flap element and keeps the exhaust hole closed. If the flap element is released from the open/close controller, the open/close means opens by the pressure of inflation gas to expand an opening area of the exhaust hole.

  • Patent number: 7481449
Abstract: An airbag of an airbag device for the driver's seat of the invention is stored in a way that a carbody-side wall part and a driver-side wall part are overlapped and spread flat, and the airbag is folded in three steps so that widths between opposing outer edge portions with a gas opening as the center are reduced. In the first step of the folding, the carbody-side wall part and the driver-side wall part are overlapped and spread flat, and then right and left edge portions are folded toward the carbody-side wall so that wound regions are provided. In the second step of the folding, areas by front and rear edge portions are folded toward the driver-side wall, so that two regions that have been folded each cover approximately half the gas opening. In the third step, areas by the right and left edge portions that have been folded in the second step are folded in such a manner as to be bent upward.

  • Patent number: 7475906
Abstract: The airbag apparatus includes an airbag provided with a flap element for opening and closing an exhaust hole. The flap element includes a flap and an adjusting belt. The leading end region of the adjusting belt is sewn to the flap by a generally straight sewn seam and acts as a joint portion to the flap. The root region of the adjusting belt is joined to an open/close mechanism. A first terminal of the sewn seam disposed proximate a root region of the joint portion is located farther away from the open/close mechanism relative to a second terminal disposed proximate a leading end of the joint portion. The sewn seam is configured rupturable from the first terminal when the airbag inflates with the adjusting belt engaged with the open/close mechanism to separate the joint portion of the adjusting belt from the flap body so the flap uncovers the exhaust hole.

  • Patent number: 7475902
Abstract: The steering wheel includes a wheel body and an airbag apparatus disposed on top of a boss. The wheel body is divided into a shaft side division joined to the steering shaft, and a ring side division disposed proximate the ring. The ring side division is rotatable with respect to the shaft side division such that a ring plane is aligned generally vertically. The boss includes an actuator that rotates and moves the ring side division to align the ring plane generally vertically. The actuator completes its operation to align the ring plane generally vertically by the time a driver contacts the inflated airbag in the course of forward motion.
