  • Patent number: 5313293
Abstract: A display device, which is adapted for time-division driving and is free from occurrence of crosstalk, includes a pair of substrates which are arranged to be opposite to each other and at least one of which is transparent, electrodes provided respectively on surfaces of the substrates facing each other, and a material which is sandwiched between the electrodes and the light transmitting quantity of which is changed by an electric field applied between the electrodes. The electrodes formed on the surfaces of the substrates facing each other constitute scanning electrodes and signal electrodes which intersect each other to form display portions. The signal electrodes constitutes independent electrodes formed independently of each other in units of display portions. Outside leads of the respective independent electrodes are passed through the substrate provided with the electrodes and are led out to the back surface of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5291322
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device is disclosed, which comprises a liquid crystal cell including a first substrate having a first electrode, a second substrate having a second electrode, which is opposite to the first substrate, and a nematic liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; a first polarizer disposed outside of the first substrate; a second polarizer disposed outside of the second substrate; and at least one optically anisotropic layer disposed at least one of between the first substrate and the first polarizer and between the second substrate and the second polarizer. The twist angle of the nematic liquid crystal layer is greater than 180.degree.; and the following conditions are fulfilled: ##EQU1## where .DELTA.n.sub.LC represents a birefringence of the nematic liquid crystal; d.sub.LC a thickness of the nematic liquid crystal layer; .DELTA.n.sub.i a birefringence of the optically anisotropic layer; d.sub.

  • Patent number: 5265341
Abstract: A battery powered line trimmer having a forward and rearward handle attached thereto, and further having an arm cradle atop the battery casing allowing the operator to rest his forearm upon it during operation. The arm cradle allowing the operator to maintain control of and maneuver the line trimmer by using the rear handle and arm cradle should the need arise for him to release his grip of the forward handle while cutting vegetation. The line trimmer further has a relatively high ratio of mass movement of inertia about a vertical axis extending through the center of gravity to mass of the line trimmer.

  • Patent number: 5157526
Abstract: The polarizer of the present invention is composed of mediums having different refractive indices, by which ordinary light in incidented light is wholly reflected at a boundary between laminated medium I and medium II and extraordinary light is transmitted through the medium II. The medium II is so arranged as to be almost 45.degree. to the light axis, and thickness of the medium II is selected as a value with which the medium II works as a half wave length plate to the transmitting light. The polarizer, which has high transparency by reduction of absorption and is able to make most of incident light be similarly polarized light, is obtained. A polarizer for and apparatus for bright liquid crystal display, which is able to be enlarged to a large size display without light absorption, can be provided.
