  • Publication number: 20010048414
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device which carries out matrix driving of a liquid crystal layer by applying AC pulses to the liquid crystal layer through a plurality of scan electrodes and a plurality of data electrodes which face and cross each other. A method of driving such a liquid crystal display comprises a reset step of applying a reset pulse to liquid crystal to reset the liquid crystal to an initial state, a selection step of applying a selection pulse to the liquid crystal to select a final state of the liquid crystal, an evolution step of applying an evolution pulse to the liquid crystal to cause the liquid crystal to evolve to the selected final state. The reset pulse and the evolution pulse have alternating cycles which are longer than that of the selection pulse, and the adjustment of the alternating cycles of the reset pulse and of the evolution pulse are made by changing the pulse waveform applied to each of the scan electrodes.

  • Publication number: 20010038373
Abstract: A matrix driving method of a liquid crystal display which has liquid crystal which exhibits a cholesteric phase by applying voltages to the liquid crystal through a plurality of row electrodes and a plurality of column electrodes which cross each other at a right angle and face each other. In order to carry out writing on a target pixel which is in a planar state, a voltage V1 is applied to a row electrode which defines the target pixel, and a divided voltage of −V1 is applied to other peripheral row electrodes. Meanwhile, a voltage −V1 is applied to a column electrode which defines the target pixel, and a divided voltage of V1 is applied to other peripheral column electrodes. Thereby, only the target pixel is driven, and the reflectance of the part of the liquid crystal becomes lower. Thus, writing is carried out only on the target pixel.

  • Publication number: 20010028421
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a liquid crystal display device that essentially comprises a liquid crystal display unit and an electric circuit unit. The liquid crystal display unit comprises three liquid crystal panels, i.e., blue, green and red liquid crystal panels respectively containing blue, green and red liquid crystal layers and scanning electrodes, while the electric circuit unit comprises blue and green scanning electrode drive circuit that is connected to the scanning electrodes of the blue and green liquid crystal panels, and a red scanning electrode drive circuit that is connected to the scanning electrodes of the red liquid crystal panel. Since the blue and green scanning electrode drive circuit is provided common to the blue and green liquid crystal panels, and since the blue and green liquid crystal layers has substantially same electrical characteristic, the structure of the device can be simplified without decreasing image quality.

  • Publication number: 20010026260
Abstract: A display device which has a liquid crystal display which has a plurality liquid crystal pixels arranged in a matrix and which writes an image thereon after resetting the liquid crystal. The method of writing on the liquid crystal display can be selected from driving methods according to interlace scanning in which a frame is divided into a plurality of fields and writing by interlace scanning is performed and driving methods according to sequential scanning in which scanning lines are subjected to writing serially. When high-speed writing is required, for example, when display of a motion picture, display of inputted letters or scroll display is desired, one of the driving methods according to interlace scanning is selected. In interlace scanning, based on the end of a blackout state of a scanning line in a field, selection of a scanning line in the next field for writing is started.

  • Publication number: 20010024188
Abstract: A matrix driving method for a liquid crystal display which has liquid crystal which exhibits a cholesteric phase and is capable of keeping an image displayed thereon after turn-off of an electric field applied thereto by using a plurality of scan electrodes and a plurality of data electrodes which are arranged to face and cross each other with the liquid crystal in-between. The method has a reset step of applying a reset pulse to reset the liquid crystal to a homeotropic state, a selection step of selecting the final state of the liquid crystal, and an evolution step of stabilizing the liquid crystal to the selected state. The selection step has a first step including a time of applying substantially 0 volt to the liquid crystal, a second step of applying a selection pulse to select the final state of the liquid crystal and a third step, after the second step, including a time of applying substantially 0 volt to the liquid crystal.

  • Patent number: 6124908
Abstract: A liquid crystal element has a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent, and a composite layer, which is retained between said pair of substrates, comprising a transparent resin matrix and a liquid crystal material having cholesteric characteristics.(1) In the liquid crystal element, a contact angle between the liquid crystal material and the resin used in the transparent resin matrix is 30.degree. or less.(2) In the liquid crystal element, said liquid crystal material reflects a light component having a wavelength in a range from 1.0 .mu.m to 1.5 .mu.m in a planar state.(3) In the liquid crystal element, said transparent resin matrix is formed by polymerizing of a mixture of compound having the following formula (1) and multi-functional acrylate derivative, ##STR1## wherein n is a natural number from 1 to 2.
