  • Patent number: 5752485
Abstract: The invention provides an output torque control method and apparatus for a lean burn internal combustion engine which accounts for aging of component parts, and in which no stepwise change of torque or shock occur when an air fuel ratio is changed. The method and apparatus according to the invention control an intake air amount while maintaining an emission purification function by controlling the air fuel ratio to that of a theoretical mixture (air fuel ratio of 14.7) in a case where a limit NOx emission is determined by using a detected air fuel ratio and lean burn operation becomes difficult due to the amount of NOx emissions. Abrupt change of an output torque when the air fuel ratio is changed is curtailed by controlling a fuel amount or an air amount after calculating the fuel amount or the air amount from an engine speed and an accelerator depression angle.

  • Patent number: 5642709
Abstract: An engine power train control method and control apparatus for a vehicle having an engine and an automatic transmission is capable of quickly changing an air-fuel ratio to meet the requirements for exhaust gas without producing shocks and without reducing engine torque. An air-fuel ratio command value is varied stepwise for transition between an air-fuel ratio for lean-burn operation and a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, and at the same time, the period following the completion of the stepwise variation of the air-fuel ratio command value, a basic fuel amount fed to the engine is varied stepwise from a value determined according to the air amount and an engine speed to a value determined according to a position of an accelerator pedal of the vehicle and the engine speed. In this way, shocks do not occur and the operability is improved, because the engine torque remains substantially constant through the air-fuel ratio transition.

  • Patent number: 5640939
Abstract: An engine control apparatus in which an air/fuel ratio for the engine is controlled between the stoichiometric point and a lean point. The engine control apparatus is constructed so as to detect a predetermined period of the transient time in which the air/fuel ratio is switched from the stoichiometric point to the lean point or from the lean point to the stoichiometric point, and delay an ignition timing during the predetermined period of transient time.

  • Patent number: 5608626
Abstract: At a torque converter characteristic assuming unit, during non gear shift, gear ratio and an input shaft torque are assumed and also during gear shift, accessory torque is assumed. So as to correct the accessory torque a deviation between pump torque and engine torque is learned and this value is given to the accessory torque, thereby the input shaft torque can be executed and assumed. A drive shaft torque is obtained from a drive shaft torque calculating unit, a control period of the drive shaft torque is determined, a reference drive shaft torque is determined during torque control period from a reference drive shaft torque setting unit. A deviation between the reference drive shaft torque and the drive shaft torque is obtained from a torque deviation executing unit. An engine controlling unit varies the engine torque by controlling an ignition period so as to decrease substantially zero the deviation.

  • Patent number: 5580331
Abstract: In an attempt to accomplish an object to absorb a driving torque difference caused by a difference in a change gear ratio between before and after shifting and to reduce a shift shock, adopted is such a constitution that target driving torque characteristics with which said driving torque before and after shifting will become nearly equal are stored, and engine torque control will be effected according to said characteristics. The control device is so constituted that, during shifting, the engine torque is decreased to suppress a driving torque variation resulting from inertia variation, and the engine torque before a specific period from the completion of shifting is outputted higher than the normal torque, and the engine torque before a specific period from the completion of shifting is outputted higher than the normal torque to reset to the normal engine torque after the specific period after the completion of shifting.

  • Patent number: 5508923
Abstract: The invention provides a system for controlling a vehicle engine according to a plurality of stored torque patterns for various vehicle operating environments, based upon the accelerator pedal position and the vehicle speed. A vehicle environment, detection unit evaluates the vehicle environment and a target drive shaft torque pattern is selected from the plurality of target drive shaft torque patterns stored in a torque pattern storage. A target drive shaft torque calculating unit determines a target drive shaft torque from the selected target drive shaft torque pattern, the detected accelerator pedal operating amount and the detected vehicle speed. Finally, an engine output calculator determines an engine output at which a vehicle drive shaft generates the target drive shaft torque, and outputs the determined engine output to an engine output control unit.

  • Patent number: 5496227
Abstract: Torque control method and apparatus for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle. A value of a desired drive shaft torque for the motor vehicle is determined on the basis of at least an accelerator pedal stroke for thereby controlling a drive shaft torque of the motor vehicle so as to assume the desired drive shaft torque value by controlling a gear ratio of a transmission gear coupling an output shaft of the engine to at least a drive shaft of the motor vehicle on the basis of the value of the desired drive shaft torque as determined. A gear ratio of the transmission gear and a flow rate of intake air fed to the engine are determined through different procedures in dependence on whether or not a torque transfer mechanism coupling the output shaft of the engine to an input shaft of the transmission gear is in a lock-up state in which the output shaft and the input shaft are coupled directly without slip.
