Patent number: 9665128Abstract: A more efficient component shielding system is provided for a portable electronic device. The system includes a metal shield covering multiple electronic components on the device PCB, including two or more electronic components requiring shielding. The metal shield includes a top portion and one or more descending side walls encompassing the periphery of the metal shield except at one or more edges where the metal shield contacts the housing. In addition, one or more internal walls attached to the shield top portion form internal walls separating the two or more electronic components requiring shielding from one another. In an embodiment, a plurality of spring clips soldered to the PCB are used to hold the side walls and internal walls to the PCB.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 2015Date of Patent: May 30, 2017Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLCInventors: Joseph Allore, Michael J Lombardi, Natalie J Stevens

Patent number: 9591766Abstract: A device interconnection system uses an indexed carrier to locate an array of contacts on an array of solder pads on a printed circuit board. In an embodiment, the PCB is indexed to a device housing in the same manner that it is indexed to the carrier, allowing the array of contacts to match and protrude through an array of holes in the housing. In a further embodiment, the housing is substantially metallic, and the array of holes in the housing are located in an insulating plate formed in the housing.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2015Date of Patent: March 7, 2017Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLCInventors: Michael J Lombardi, Joseph L Allore, Natalie J Stevens

Patent number: 9550335Abstract: A device housing assembly has a display module including a front pane and a rear pane, the rear pane having a section longer than the front pane in at least one direction. The housing assembly further has a transparent lens and plastic housing, the transparent lens having a front and rear surface; and an adhesive between the front transparent pane and the rear surface of the transparent lens. The housing includes a support structure molded to the rear surface of the transparent lens positioned proximally to the longer section of the rear pane and adjacent to the front pane of glass, the structure providing mechanical support for the rear pane.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2013Date of Patent: January 24, 2017Assignee: Google Technology Holdings LLCInventors: Adam R Cole, Joseph L Allore, Michael J. Publication number: 20160285494Abstract: A battery packaging technique for a portable communications device encloses two or more RF transmission lines under or within a metallic side seal of a battery pack of the device. The RF transmission lines are controlled in this manner during assembly and are well-constrained across the width and thickness of the pack, but at the same time are free to slide along the length of the battery to allow for easy assembly to the device. The metallic side seal may comprise a metal foil, and in an embodiment the RF transmission lines are color-coded so that they can be accurately assembled to the finished device.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 26, 2015Publication date: September 29, 2016Inventors: Michael J. Lombardi, Joseph L. Allore, Natalie J. Stevens

Patent number: 9250729Abstract: A method for manipulating graphical user interface elements includes displaying a plurality of elements on a touch screen of an electronic device. Based on a first touch screen contact detected on a first side of the electronic device and a slide contact detected on a second side of the electronic device, a first touch screen element is selected and the non-selected touch screen element(s) are manipulated relative to the first element. The slide contact can be interpreted by the electronic device as a drag, push, or rotate relative to the first element. Various features of the slide movement, such as the speed, the length, the pressure, the direction, and/or the pattern may affect the manipulation of the non-selected elements.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2013Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: Google Technology Holdings LLCInventors: Erik A Cholewin, John J Gorsica, Michael J Lombardi, Natalie J Stevens, Ian M Snyder

Patent number: 9182903Abstract: A method on an electronic device is described. A set of graphics and a set of stored keywords are received in a higher-power mode of operation, each graphic corresponding to one or more of the stored keywords. The higher-power mode of operation is discontinued to enter a lower-power mode of operation. In the lower-power mode: audio signals are listened for; it is detected whether any keywords of the set of stored keywords are present in the audio signals; detected keywords present in the audio signals are stored; a graphic is selected from the set of graphics based on a comparison between the set of detected keywords and the set of stored keywords; a first portion of the selected graphic is displayed, in response to the at least one control signal, on a first area of a touch screen display that is within a first portion of the touch screen display.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2013Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: Google Technology Holdings LLCInventors: Michael J. Lombardi, Mitul R. Patel, Amber M. Pierce, Natalie J. Stevens

Patent number: 9063564Abstract: A method on an electronic device is described. A touch screen display of the electronic device is actively controlled in a higher-power mode of operation. The higher-power mode is discontinued to enter a lower-power mode of operation. In the lower-power mode: a first control signal is provided to the touch screen display and a first image is displayed on a first area of the touch screen display; occurrence of a first touch input that corresponds to the first area is determined and in response thereto, a second control signal is provided to the touch screen display and each action icon of a set of action icon is displayed on the touch screen display; occurrence of a second touch input that corresponds to an action icon is determined and in response thereto, an action indication for the current display session is selected and a corresponding selected action is performed.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2013Date of Patent: June 23, 2015Assignee: Google Technology Holdings LLCInventors: Michael J. Lombardi, Mitul R. Patel, Amber M. Pierce, Natalie J. Stevens
