  • Patent number: 8032492
Abstract: Establishing a plurality of storage areas includes associating each of a first plurality of storage areas of a first type that contain sections of data with corresponding ones of second plurality of storage areas of a second type having pointers to alternative sections of data storage areas of the first type, where initially none of the second plurality of storage areas is available for accessing data corresponding thereto, and, after associating all of the first and second plurality of storage areas, activating the second plurality of storage areas to make the second plurality of storage areas available for accessing data. Exclusive access may be enabled for all of the first plurality of storage areas prior to activating the second plurality of storage areas or to each storage area one at a time.

  • Patent number: 7869768
Abstract: A technique is directed to controlling speaker volume of a speaker of a portable communications device (e.g., a cellular telephone, a cordless hand phone, a combination of a cellular phone and a hands-free ear piece, etc.). The technique involves receiving an environmental signal from an environmental microphone of the portable communications device. The technique further involves identifying a level of environmental noise based on the environmental signal, and adjusting the speaker volume of the speaker of the portable communications device (e.g., ringer volume, voice output volume, etc.) based on the identified level of environmental noise. Such operation enables a user to accommodate a variety of settings without burdening the user with ongoing manual volume control of the portable communications device.

  • Patent number: 7737915
Abstract: A computer display includes a screen, a workstation port configured to receive a workstation signal from a workstation controller, and a wireless port configured to receive an external signal from an external device. The external device is different than the workstation controller. The computer display further includes a display circuit coupled to the screen, the workstation port and the wireless port. The display circuit is configured to output (i) workstation information on the screen in response to the workstation signal from the workstation controller and (ii) external information on the screen in response to the external signal from the external device. Accordingly, the user is now capable of enjoying the image quality of a larger video display (e.g., a 15-inches, 17-inches, 19-inches, 21-inches, large projection screens, etc.).

  • Publication number: 20080109632
Abstract: Accessing stored data includes providing a virtual storage area having a table of pointers that point to sections of at least two other storage areas, where the virtual storage area contains no sections of data, in response to a request for accessing data of the virtual storage area, determining which particular one of the other storage areas contain the data, and accessing the data on the particular one of the other storage areas using the table of pointers. Accessing stored data may also include associating a first one of the other storage areas with the virtual storage area, where the virtual area device represents a copy of data of the first one of the other storage areas. Accessing stored data may also include causing all of the pointers of the table to initially point to sections of the first one of the other storage areas when the virtual storage area is initially associated with the first one of the other storage areas. The storage areas may be storage devices. The sections may be tracks.

  • Patent number: 7266572
Abstract: Restoring data includes providing data in a first storage area that contains sections of data, providing data in a second storage area where the second type has, for each section of data thereof, at least one of: a pointer to a corresponding section of data of the first storage area and a pointer to corresponding section of data of a third storage area of the first type. In one embodiment, a sections of the first storage area are replaced with pointers to the third storage area. In other embodiments, sections of a fourth storage area of the first type are replaced with pointers to the third storage area and optionally with pointers to the first storage area. In another embodiment, data is copied from the second storage area to a third storage area of the second type.

  • Patent number: 7249130
Abstract: Accessing data includes a host establishing a relationship between a first storage area of a first type containing data and a second storage area of a second type containing pointers to data provided in storage areas of the first type, where the storage areas are provided in a storage device coupled to the host. In response to the host writing data to a particular section of the first storage area after establishing the relationship, the particular section is copied from the first storage area to a third storage area of the first type prior to the write operation being executed. A corresponding pointer of the second storage area is adjusted to point to the third storage area.

  • Patent number: 7240238
Abstract: Two data storage systems are interconnected by a data link for remote mirroring of data. Each volume of data is configured as local, primary in a remotely mirrored volume pair, or secondary in a remotely mirrored volume pair. Normally, a host computer directly accesses either a local or a primary volume, and data written to a primary volume is automatically sent over the link to a corresponding secondary volume. Each remotely mirrored volume pair can operate in a selected synchronization mode including synchronous, semi-synchronous, adaptive copy-remote write pending, and adaptive copy-disk. Direct write access to a secondary volume is denied if a “sync required” attribute is set for the volume and the volume is not synchronized.

  • Patent number: 7159139
Abstract: A digital data storage system in the form of a mass storage subsystem in which information is stored on one or more disk storage units, with a storage element constituting a track on a disk storage device and each track storing a plurality of records. Each track in each disk storage device of the digital data storage system is associated with a descriptor. When the control device retrieves the contents of a record, it can process the contents to generate a check value and compare the generated check value with the check value for the record as stored in the descriptor associated with the track. If they compare appropriately, the control device can determine that the record that was retrieved was, in fact, the record that was to be retrieved. On the other hand, if they do not compare appropriately, the control device can determine that the record that was retrieved was not the proper record.

  • Patent number: 7127556
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manipulating data in a storage device that is coupled to a host computer. Manipulations that can be performed by the storage device include moving non-contiguous blocks of data between the host computer and the storage device in a single operation. Other manipulations can be performed directly by the storage device without passing data to or from the host computer and include copying data from one logical object that is defined on the host computer to another, initializing, backing-up, transforming, or securely deleting a logical object that is defined by the host computer with a single command. In one embodiment, an application programming interface is provided that allows a relationship between logical objects on a host computer and storage locations on a storage device to be communicated between the host computer and the storage device.

  • Patent number: 7073090
Abstract: A primary data storage system is linked to a geographically remote secondary data storage system for automatically maintaining a remote copy of the data in the primary storage. The primary data storage system has a primary cache memory, and the secondary data storage system has a secondary cache memory. The primary data storage system controller has a first remote link adapter coupled between the primary cache memory and the communications link for transferring the data to the communications link. The secondary data storage system controller has a second remote link adapter coupled between the communications link and the secondary cache memory for transferring the data from the communications link to the secondary cache memory. In this fashion, the first remote link adapter and the second remote link adapter automatically transfer the data to the secondary cache memory for writing of the data into the secondary data storage.

  • Patent number: 6961818
Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product are disclosed for managing data in a cache. A first cache memory is provided that includes data. A second cache memory is provided that also includes data in which at least some of the data in the first cache memory is the same as at least some of the data in the second cache memory. In response to a request for data that is stored in both the first and second cache memories, one of the cache memories is chosen in accordance with an access balancing technique. The access balancing technique may include at least one of selection using round robin, and selection based on statistical analysis such as access frequency of the first and second cache memories. First and second access balancing techniques may be used for data accessed from the cache memories, which may comprise disk data and control data, such as data indicating whether data in the caches has been modified and is write pending.
