    Abstract: A metering roller for a printing machine utilising a high viscosity ink. The metering roller has an axle, a cylindrical roller body formed on the axle and an annular surface layer. The annular surface layer has a surface of a low surface energy and a pattern of a plurality of ink receiving recesses formed in the annular surface layer. The annular surface layer can be integral with the cylindrical roller body or separate from it and can be a plastic material. The annular surface layer has a surface energy in the range of from 18 to 46 dynes/cm.
