Patent number: 7506488Abstract: Methods are provided for making slider-operated fasteners for use in reclosable plastic bags using at least a double index and dual unit operations. The methods involve forming two preseals, forming two notches within the preseals, applying two sliders into the previously formed notches, and applying two end stops proximate the previously applied sliders by having the various stations perform their respective functions, either simultaneously or at generally the same time, on different parts of the fastener spaced approximately at a double index. Also provided are methods of producing finished bags by applying the slider-operated fastener to a flat web of plastic film and conveying the web to a vertical or a horizontal form-fill-seal machine.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2007Date of Patent: March 24, 2009Assignee: Pactiv CorporationInventors: Toby R. Thomas, Nathan A. Kolovich, Craig E. Cappel, Timothy W. Pistner, Alexander R. Provan

Patent number: 7497623Abstract: Packages with active agents are described. Generally, the disclosed packages have a pair of opposing body panels joined together along a pair of opposing sides and a bottom bridging the sides so as to define a mouth opposite the bottom, a reclosable fastener extending along the mouth, and an active agent. The reclosable fastener includes a pair of polymeric tracks, in which each of the tracks includes a mating element and a fin portion. The mating elements are releasably engageable to each other, and each of the fin portions extends downwards from the respective mating element towards the bottom of the reclosable package. The active agent is associated with at least one of the fin portions for communication with the interior of the reclosable package.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2005Date of Patent: March 3, 2009Assignee: Pactiv CorporationInventors: Toby R. Publication number: 20060291756Abstract: Web materials for use in forming reclosable packages generally include a first material layer made of a barrier material, and an active agent carried by the first material layer. When embodied as a bag, the web is used to form at least one of the body panels of the bag, with a pair of opposing body panels joined together along a pair of opposing sides, with a bottom bridging the sides in order to define a compartment between the opposing body panels. The active agent is disposed on the first material layer so as to be in communication with the compartment.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2006Publication date: December 28, 2006Inventors: Toby Thomas, Nathan Kolovich, Craig Cappel

Publication number: 20060110080Abstract: Packages and structures with selective dosing of active agents are described. The at least one active agent includes a freshness-extension agent to inhibit spoilage of perishable product disposed in the package, an odor management agent to reduce, mask, or neutralize odors from garbage or waste disposed in the package, a color indicator to indicate the status of one or more other active agents, or another type of agent. Selective dosing is achieved by covering the active agent or agents by a plurality of covers. Some of these covers may be walls of a package itself.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2005Publication date: May 25, 2006Inventors: Toby Thomas, Nathan Kolovich, Craig Cappel

Patent number: 6662410Abstract: A fastener arrangement includes a fastener, a slider, and an injection-molded end stop. The fastener includes first and second tracks. The first track includes a first profile, and the second track includes a second profile for interlocking with the first profile. The fastener extends between first and second ends. The slider is slidably mounted to the fastener for movement between the first and second ends. The injection-molded end stop is located at at least one of the first and second ends. The end stop terminates the movement of the slider at the one of the first and second ends. The end stop includes interior plastic material disposed in an interior of the fastener between the first and second profiles. The one of the first and second ends includes a cut edge at an angle relative to an axis of the fastener extending between the first and second ends. The end stop may include exterior plastic material along an exterior of the fastener outside the first and second profiles and covering the cut edge.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2002Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Assignee: Pactiv CorporationInventors: Nathan A. Patent number: 6622353Abstract: A slider-operated fastener comprises first and second opposing tracks including respective first and second interlocking profiles and respective first and second fins extending downward from the respective first and second profiles. The first and second fins are sealed to each other by a plurality of spaced preseals. After generating each preseal, a notch is formed in the profiles and upper portions of the fins at the generated preseal. To install a slider onto the fastener, the slider is initially positioned within the respective notch and then threaded onto the fastener in response to relative movement of the slider and the fastener. Either before or after the steps of forming each preseal and respective notch and installing the respective slider, the fastener is attached to a moving web of plastic film. The fastener-carrying web is later folded and sealed to form individual plastic bags.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2002Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: Pactiv CorporationInventors: Alexander R. Provan, Thomas L. Coomber, Toby R. Thomas, Nathan A. Kolovich

Publication number: 20030082319Abstract: A process for preparing an end termination for use with a reclosable polymeric bag comprises providing a mixture comprising from about 70 to about 95 wt. % of a polyolefin, from about 5 to about 25 wt. % hydrocarbon, from about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % mold release agent, from about 0.1 to about 1 wt. % primary antioxidant, and at least about 0.06 wt. % secondary antioxidant. Next, the mixture is heated approximately to its appropriate application temperature and the melted mixture is injected into a mold. After the mixture is cooled to form the end termination, the end termination is ejected from the mold.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 11, 2001Publication date: May 1, 2003Inventors: Thomas A.
