  • Patent number: 6517110
Abstract: A dynamically deployed device shield (“DDDS”) including a cover, a loop shield, and a means for attaching the cover and loop shield to a vehicle structure. A dynamically deployed device (“DDD”) is contained in the loop shield and the loop shield is in turn contained in the cover. Upon deployment, a tear section in the cover separates and releases the loop shield and DDD. As the DDD expands and moves towards its location, the loop shield unfolds, guides the deployment of the DDD, and prevents the DDD from overshooting its final location. The shield also prevents the DDD from becoming caught on interior vehicle components and supplements the DDD with a larger protective impact surface. Optionally, a fabric shield is attached to the bottom of the DDDS to cover the area of a vehicle window below the deployed DDD and further increase the protective impact surface of the system.

  • Patent number: 6505853
Abstract: An apparatus (10) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle (12) that has a side structure (16) and a roof (28) comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) that is inflatable away from the roof into a position between the side structure of the vehicle and a vehicle occupant. The device (14) has a perimeter (50) defined by an upper edge (52) positioned adjacent the roof (28), an opposite lower edge (54), and front and rear edges (56 and 58) spaced apart along the upper and lower edges. The device (14) includes overlying panels secured together along the perimeter (50) to define an inflatable volume (34) and is free from association with an inflatable tube. An inflator (24) provides inflation fluid for inflating the device (14). A flexible elongated member (90) extends through the device (14) and is coiled around a portion (70) of the inflatable volume (34) of the device. The member (90) has a first end (92) and an opposite second end (94) fixed to the vehicle side structure (16).

  • Patent number: 6378897
Abstract: A dynamically deployed device (“DDD”) assembly comprising a DDD, an anchor, and a mechanical stop, a vehicle member, a tether, or any other device that stops the rotation of the anchor. The anchor can be pivotally fastened to and stowed inside a vehicle structure member, with a DDD cord fastened to the end of the DDD anchor opposite the pivot attachment point. Upon deployment, the inflating DDD pulls the DDD cord tight. The DDD cord in turn pulls the anchor down such that the anchor rotates around its pivot attachment point and comes to rest against the stop, member, tether, or other similar device that stops the rotation. In this secured, locked position, the anchor provides a DDD attachment point offset from the vehicle structure member to which the anchor is fastened. Embodiments of the anchor include a link or cam.

  • Patent number: 6203058
Abstract: Apparatus (10) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle (12) which has a side structure (16) and a roof (28) comprises an inflatable curtain (14). The curtain (14) is inflatable in a first direction away from the roof into a position between the side structure of the vehicle and a vehicle occupant. The inflatable curtain (14) when inflated extends fore and aft in the vehicle (12) along the side structure (16) of the vehicle. First and second inflatable members (52 and 54) connect the inflatable curtain (14) to the vehicle (12). An inflation fluid source (24) provides inflation fluid for inflating the inflatable curtain (14) and the first and second inflatable members (52 and 54). The first and second inflatable members (52 and 54) are inflatable to resist movement of the inflatable curtain (14) away from the side structure (16) of the vehicle (12) when the inflatable curtain is inflated.

  • Patent number: 6126194
Abstract: A seat restraint system whose torso belt includes an inflatable structure that inflates upon impact to protect the occupants of a vehicle such as an automobile. The inflatable structure is linked to a gas generator and crash sensor. When an impact above a predetermined level of severity is detected, the gas generator is ignited, inflating the inflatable structure which contracts in length as it inflates. In a preferred embodiment, the inflatable structure is a braided tube. As the braided tube inflates, the diameter of the tube increases significantly and its length decreases significantly, due to the orientation of the fibers comprising the braided tube. The contraction in length pretensions the seat belt system by pulling any slack out of the seat belt systems. In a frontal impact, the inflated structure restricts the forward motion of an occupant and distributes crash loads over a larger occupant surface area to reduce both primary and secondary injuries.
