Patent number: 9015342Abstract: A method and system for designing file replication schemes in file sharing systems consider node storage constraints and node up/down statistics, file storage costs, and file transfer costs among the nodes, user request rates for the files, and user specified file availability requirements. Based on these considerations, a systematic method for designing file replication schemes can be implemented. The method first determines the number of copies of the files to be stored in the system to achieve the desired goal (e.g., to satisfy file availability requirements, or to maximize the system hit rate), and then selects the nodes at which to store the file copies to minimize the total expected cost. The file replication scheme for a peer-to-peer file sharing system in a distributed and adaptive manner can scale to a large number of nodes and files and can handle changes in the user request pattern over time.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2008Date of Patent: April 21, 2015Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Jian Ni, Jie Lin, Steven J. Publication number: 20150019301Abstract: A system and method for providing cloud performance capability estimation and supporting recommender systems by simulating bottleneck and its migration for any given complex application in a cost-efficient way are provided. To do this, first, the system and method builds an abstract performance model for an application based on the resource usage pattern of the application in an in-house test-bed (i.e., a white-box environment). Second, it computes relative performance scores of many different cloud configurations given from black-boxed clouds using a cloud metering system. Third, it applies the collected performance scores into the abstract performance model to estimate performance capabilities and potential bottleneck situations of those cloud configurations. Finally, using the model, it can support recommender systems by providing performance estimates and simulations of bottlenecks and bottleneck migrations between resource sub-systems while new resources are added or replaced.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2013Publication date: January 15, 2015Inventors: Gueyoung Jung, Naveen Sharma, Tridib Mukherjee, Frank Michael Goetz

Patent number: 8643874Abstract: A method and system generate a workflow for the production of a three-dimensional document. A knowledge base contains production rules for several dimensional documents. The production rules relate to a plurality of jobs, i.e., units of work involved in the production of a dimensional document. The rules also identify human and/or mechanical resources required to complete each job. The system receives, from multiple service providers, capability information corresponding to each service provider's available resources. The capability information is associated with the production rules and stored in the knowledge base. When a user selects a dimensional document to be produced, the system selects appropriate production rules for the document, accesses the associated capability information, and automatically generates a workflow for the document. The system distributes various jobs in the workflow among at least two different service providers.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2009Date of Patent: February 4, 2014Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Frank Michael Goetz, Lee Coy Moore, Meera Sampath, Naveen Sharma

Patent number: 8411304Abstract: A method and system for enabling automatic service sharing and custom user interface features in a fleet of multi-function devices. EIP (Extensible Interface Platform) services can be registered via a peer-to-peer discovery subsystem associated with a multi-function device grid infrastructure. EIP service registration information can be submitted and stored in the grid infrastructure. The multi-function devices can be equipped with an enterprise EIP client, which can query the discovery subsystem and apply a corporate policy. The discovery subsystem detects the optimal instance of the service based on loading and availability factors and then returns a reference with respect to the services that allows access to enhanced services. Such an approach enables a fleet of multi-function devices to dynamically discover EIP services and auto populate service options to provide increased capability, reduced complexity, and improved speed.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2009Date of Patent: April 2, 2013Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Wendell L.
