  • Publication number: 20100318500
Abstract: An archive of items, which are computing data accessed by a user, is created at a semantic object level. The object archiving may group seemingly disparate items as a composite object, which may then be stored to enable retrieval by the user at a later point in time. The composite object may include metadata from the various items to enable identifying the composite object, providing retrieval capabilities (e.g., search, etc.), and so forth. In some aspects, an archiving process may extract item data from an item that is accessed by a computing device. Next, the item may be selected by a schema for inclusion in a composite object when the item data meets criteria specified in the schema. The composite object(s) may then be stored in an object store as an archive (backup).

  • Publication number: 20100274765
Abstract: The claimed subject matter provides a system and/or a method that facilitates distributed backup and versioning techniques for network-based backup architectures. When data is committed to a backup system, a backup version can be created. The generated backup version can be a complete rendition of data or the generated backup version can be a differential between the data and backup information previously committed to the system. The generated backup version can be replicated across a distributed network of peers. Replication can be based upon a desire level of redundancy of versions, location of peers, network topology of peers, storage capacity of peers, health of peers, type of peer, and the like. In addition, versions can be retained based upon a configurable number of desired versions.

  • Publication number: 20100257403
Abstract: Provided herein are systems and methodologies for highly efficient backup and restoration in a network-based backup system. A distributed, hybrid peer-to-peer (P2P)/cloud backup architecture is leveraged, wherein information can be segmented and distributed across a set of peers and one or more global storage locations (e.g., cloud storage locations) within an associated network or internetwork. Using this architecture, images and/or delta blocks corresponding to respective images are intelligently placed across storage locations based on various network factors such as node locality, health, capacity, or the like. Similarly, restoration of a system can be performed by querying respective locations at which data corresponding to a desired system state are located and pulling the data from one or more optimal network locations as listed in an index and/or a similar structure based on similar network factors.

  • Publication number: 20100257142
Abstract: Provided herein are systems and methodologies for highly efficient restoration in a network-based backup system. As described herein, differential-based analysis can be utilized such that a new complete differential is calculated based on signatures and/or other information relating to a given item to be restored prior to retrieving backup data. Based on the differential, only blocks determined to be unique between the current version of the item and the desired version are transmitted, which can then be merged with non-unique locally present blocks to obtain the fully restored version of the item. Further, a hybrid architecture can be employed, wherein signatures and/or data are stored at a global location within a network as well as one or more local peers. Accordingly, a backup client can obtain information necessary for restoration from either the global location or a nearby peer, thus further reducing latency and bandwidth consumption.

  • Patent number: 7702745
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel client side caching (CSC) infrastructure that supports transition states at the directory level to facilitate a seamless operation across connectivity states between client and remote server. More specifically, persistent caching is performed to safeguard the user (e.g., client) and/or the client applications across connectivity interruptions and/or bandwidth changes. This is accomplished in part by caching to a client data store the desirable file(s) together with the appropriate file access parameters. Moreover, the client maintains access to cached files during periods of disconnect. Furthermore, portions of a path can be offline while other portions upstream can remain online. CSC operates on the logical path which cooperates with DFS which operates on the physical path to keep track of files cached, accessed and changes in the directories. In addition, truth on the client is facilitated whether or not a conflict of file copies exists.

  • Patent number: 7634514
Abstract: Described is a system and method that facilitates fast and reliable synchronization of computer/file system directories. A synchronization (FastSync) subsystem operates in a discovery/enumeration phase to provide a calling client with a set of the differences between directories, and then operates in an action phase to perform operations as directed by the client to synchronize the different directories. The discovery/enumeration and action phases use parallel operation and I/O (input/output) pipelining. Multiple threads are used during enumeration to enumerate each directory's children, and enqueues each sub-directory to be handled by a new thread. During the action phase, when an operation is requested, the FastSync subsystem packages up the operation, item pointer, and context information into an internal context block and queues that packet as a work item for a process thread pool to handle.

  • Patent number: 7349943
Abstract: A system and method that automatically and transparently handle client-side caching of network file data, independent of any remote file handling protocol. A protocol-independent client-side caching mechanism is inserted as a service that handles file-related requests directed to a network, and attempts to satisfy the requests via a client-side caching persistent store. By way of pre-process and post-process calls on a file create request, the caching mechanism creates file-related data structures, and overwrites the information in those structures that a buffering service uses to call back to a network redirector, whereby the client-side caching mechanism inserts itself into the communication flow between the network redirector and the buffering service.

  • Patent number: 7076611
Abstract: The present invention is directed at a system and method for managing and evicting objects stored in a cache. The invention provides a mechanism for determining which objects to evict based on a weight that is calculated for each object stored in the cache. The weight is determined by at least two factors, including file size, file type, primary user, last access time, and the like, and by the relative importance of each of the factors. The weight for each object may be determined autonomously and/or may be determined upon a trigger event. The factors and their relative importance may be obtained from a policy applicable to one or several computers.

  • Publication number: 20050198385
Abstract: A system and method for implementing a consistent user name-space on networked computing devices is provided. When a network connection between a local or host computing device and one or more remote computing devices is present, remote items are represented using the same methodology as items located on the host computing device. To the user, remote and local items are indistinguishable. When the network connection is lost or items located on a remote computer are otherwise unavailable, the unavailable items remain represented on the host computing device. Unavailable items are represented in a way that informs the user that the items may not be fully accessed.
