Abstract: A method is described for strengthening or restoring strength to a brittle oxide substrate which includes the steps of coating the brittle oxide substrate with an aqueous solution containing a silane-based composition, and curing the coating to form a transparent layer on the brittle oxide substrate. Also disclosed are novel compositions used to coat brittle oxide substrates, and silane-coated brittle oxide containers.

Abstract: An improvement in the process of incorporating a modifier ingredient into the surface region of a resinous article is described herein. The basic process includes immersing the article in a liquid such as water and contacting the immersed article with a solution of a modifier ingredient in a solvent which is immiscible with the liquid. The improvement herein comprises removing a substantial amount of air dissolved in the water layer to prevent droplets of solution from rising to the surface of the water layer during the process, thereby preventing solid modifier material from accumulating on the water surface.

Abstract: A display device, such as an LCD, has alignment layers made of different materials; thus one layer can have a low curing temperature so as not to cause damage to delicate organic layers, such as a color filter, during curing, while the other layer can have a larger tilt angle so as to minimize ambiguities in the liquid crystal material.

Abstract: A sealant composition to seal the fill port in a liquid crystal display is disclosed. The subject composition is comprised of a diglycidylether of bisphenol A epoxy precursor, a curing agent therefor and, optionally, a minor amount of a thixotropic agent.
