Publication number: 20130332754Abstract: An apparatus and associated methodology for a data storage system having an enclosure containing a plurality of drives that are individually selectable to transfer data corresponding to an execution of input/output (I/O) commands between the data storage system and another device. A memory in the enclosure temporarily stores unexecuted I/O commands, and a power supply device is capable of simultaneously operating all of the plurality of drives in support of multiple transfers of data. A power management device operably reduces a power output of the power supply device in response to a forecasted interruption in the transfer of data with one of the drives at a time when an unexecuted I/O command for the one of the drives resides in the memory.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2012Publication date: December 12, 2013Applicant: Spectra Logic CorporationInventor: Neal Downey

Publication number: 20070115582Abstract: An operator alterable space is described, for use with a data storage library. The library has a frame substantially defines an interior environment and is exposed to an exterior environment. The operator alterable space is adapted to accommodate either a drive module that is capable of storing data to a magazine storage element or a shelf module capable of accommodating at least the magazine storage element whereby the magazine storage element can be disposed in the shelf module. The operator alterable space is accessible from the exterior environment for installing either the shelf module or the drive module via an opening in the frame. The operator alterable space is also accessible to a magazine transport from the interior environment, wherein the magazine transport is capable of moving the magazine storage element to the operator alterable space.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 23, 2007Publication date: May 24, 2007Inventors: Karl Armagost, Edwin Wadsworth, Neal Downey, Christian Curtis, Matthew Starr, Ray Heineman

Publication number: 20060277423Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatuses for analyzing energy consumption of at least one storage system capable of being used by multiple users. The storage system comprises a plurality of electric energy consuming components which further comprise at least a plurality of storage devices adapted to cooperate with storage media for storing data. The storage system comprises a total user storage capacity for the storage system. At least one component energy meter is capable of measuring component energy consumption of at least one of the electric energy consuming components while the storage system is in operational use. At least one storage system energy meter is adapted to cooperate with the storage system to measure total energy consumption of the storage system while the storage system is in operational use.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 6, 2005Publication date: December 7, 2006Applicant: Spectra Logic CorporationInventors: Neal Downey, Michael Goberis, Matthew Starr

Publication number: 20050057847Abstract: The present invention provides a magazine-based library that is capable of operating on a magazine data storage element comprised of a plurality of hard disk drives and an interface that allows data to be transferred between the hard disk drives and a host computer. One embodiment of the library comprises a plurality of shelves that are each capable of supporting at least one magazine data storage element, one or more drives, and a magazine transport that is capable of moving a magazine data storage element between any one of the shelves and any one of the drives. The present invention also provides a magazine data storage element drive that is capable of being used in stand-alone mode, i.e., outside of a magazine-based library.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 16, 2003Publication date: March 17, 2005Applicant: SPECTRA LOGIC CORPORATIONInventors: Karl Armagost, Clark Brace, Marek Christer, Christian Curtis, Neal Downey, Samuel Guleff, Ray Heineman, Peter Kumpon, Ronald Permut, Christopher Pollard, David Roecker, Matthew Starr, Lee Sutherland, Nathan Thompson, Edwin Wadsworth, Jennifer Woodruff
