  • Publication number: 20170373499
Abstract: Legacy automatic variable capacitor KVAR compensation systems typically use either electromechanical devices such as relays or contactors of various forms and types to switch the selected capacitors in and out of the electrical system under some form of electronic control. These systems are slow and discontinuous in their ability to closely regulate the exact value of compensatory capacitance needed to compensate the variable and rapidly changing reactive power KVAR in the electrical power transmission and distribution networks. The present invention provides a fast response active KVAR compensator based on a variable transimpedance topology.

  • Patent number: 9819185
Abstract: In the present legacy electrical power generation and distribution system, the power quality delivered to end consumers is being degraded by a number of disruptive technologies and legislative impacts; especially with the rapidly increasing myriad of privately owned and operated domestic and commercial distributed energy generation (DEG) devices connected at any point across a low voltage (LV) distribution network. The present invention bypasses this increasing critical DEG problem by offering a solution comprising an energy processing unit (EPU) that is installed at the electrical power point of use (POU).

  • Publication number: 20170281993
Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition, textile, and mask for reducing the inhalation of pollutants. The composition includes an aqueous solution of an inorganic iodide compound, a metal phthalocyanine, and a polymeric binder. The inorganic iodide can be cuprous iodide, the metal phthalocyanine can be iron phthalocyanine, and the polymeric binder can be polyvinylpyrrolidone or polyvinyl alcohol. This pollutant-inactivating composition neutralizes pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, volatile organic compounds and other unpleasant airborne agents, without requiring elevated temperatures or bulky canisters containing adsorbents. Optionally, a humectant can also be incorporated into the coating solution to retain moisture in the active filter matrix, which enhances the activity of the composition to inactivate oxidizing gases and other toxic constituents of air pollution.

  • Patent number: 9712048
Abstract: A computer-implementable control algorithm that measures: 1) the reactive power; 2) the power factor; 3) the voltage; and 4) the line frequency. The algorithm calculates the differential compensation capacitance required that is either positive (capacitance to be added), or negative (capacitance to be removed). The new compensation capacitance is calculated from the sum or difference of the differential compensation capacitance and the current compensation capacitance. The algorithm compares the capacitor switching bit pattern for the current compensation capacitance and the capacitor switching bit pattern for the new compensation capacitance, and selects a capacitor switching bit map accordingly. The capacitor switch combination for the new compensation capacitance is switched in incrementally according to the capacitor switching bit map. To reach the selected capacitor switch combination, only one switch is switched at a time to minimize the line transient noise.

  • Publication number: 20170141692
Abstract: An energy saving alternate current (AC) series voltage regulator comprises an AC high frequency (HF) series voltage buck power regulator, a bypass contactor (K1), a bidirectional AC semiconductor device (S1) connected in parallel with the bypass contactor and a control circuitry. Under the condition of an input AC mains voltage (Vin) drops below a specified and set optimum energy savings voltage or a lower selected voltage point, the control circuitry transitions both the slow bypass contactor and the fast bidirectional AC semiconductor device, then the AC high frequency (HF) series voltage buck power regulator are switched out to save the AC high frequency (HF) series voltage buck power regulator internal power electronics usage. Under this condition, the lower input AC mains voltage is directly delivered to an electrical load by the contactor bypass system, hence achieving more energy savings.

The present invention bypasses this increasing critical DEG problem by offering a solution comprising an energy processing unit (EPU) that is installed at the customer's electrical power point of use (POU). And because of the controlled tightly voltage regulated output of the EPU, significant energy savings can be achieved through dynamic voltage control, utilizing the CVR effect, reduced reactive power demand, and reduced or eliminated peak demand billings.

  • Patent number: 9148058
Abstract: A bidirectional AC series voltage regulator that regulates an output AC voltage level regardless of the varying AC input voltage utilizing high frequency series inductors that only process a proportion of the total output power. The AC series voltage regulator detects the power inductor current direction data signal and can generate power inductor current direction data signals for its control to determine the AC input voltage polarity at all time; wherein the determination of the AC input voltage polarity is unambiguous during the AC input voltage zero crossover and near zero points; and wherein the determination of the AC input voltage polarity allows normal switching sequence of the AC bidirectional switches during the AC input voltage zero crossover and near zero points to prevent power “shoot-through.

  • Publication number: 20120272967
Abstract: A facemask structure for inactivating pathogens includes a facial contact layer that is benign to human skin followed by a subsequent interior layer and an outer layer including an anti-pathogenic material. In this manner, active, isolated anti-pathogen layers can be provided in a multilayer mask structure. For example, an important anti-viral mask structure uses one or a mixture of acids to create a low pH environment on the first inner (or outer hydrophilic layer) so that the virus laden droplets from, e.g., a sneeze, are absorbed into and away from the surface. Thus, for an infected wearer, two or more hydrophilic layers on the interior of the mask can protect the environment from an infected wearer.

  • Patent number: 6069800
Abstract: Effective harmonic correction without frequency, power or voltage limitations is achieved in a single-stage DC-to-DC converter by disconnecting the bulk capacitor of a typical single-stage converter during low voltage conditions, and by using various phase and cycle modulation techniques associated with a switchable auxiliary transformer winding which charges the bulk capacitor to control its voltage. A means is thus provided to control the level of harmonics generated depending upon the level of the AC output voltage. When the auxiliary winding is used as a clamp winding, full ZVS conditions are provided for both the auxiliary winding switch and the converter's primary winding switch. Energy can then also be directed, under independent control of the switched auxiliary winding, to independent power nodes, i.e., either the output capacitance and load, or the bulk capacitor. This ensures that the output voltage will not be affected during any period needed to recharge the bulk capacitor.

  • Patent number: 5986895
Abstract: Switching losses at high line in variable-input Class-D resonant DC-to-DC power converters regulated by changing the duty cycle of the switching transistors are avoided by making the turn-off time of the discharging switch dependent upon the current in the resonant transformer primary circuit, thereby preserving bidirectional zero-voltage switching. Losses due to asymmetrical high current pulses in one arm of the rectified output can be mitigated by use of MOSFETs as synchronous rectifiers to take the place of rectifying diodes.
