    Abstract: A method of providing voice help at a multi-function peripheral (MFP) device is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving, at an MFP device, a help request for a task, associated with the use of the MFP device, from a user and providing, at the MFP device, the user with voice help associated with the task. In one embodiment, the task is associated with a topic that the user selects. In another embodiment, the task is associated with correction of an error detected by the MFP device. One embodiment of the invention would provide the user with more “voice” detailed information than with the current technology. Furthermore, a user can easily access and activate complex features of the MFP device via voice help which have not been possible in conventional printing devices.

    Abstract: Systems and methods of providing help to users of electronic devices, such as multi-function peripherals (MFPs), are disclosed. Help information is maintained in a plurality of storage devices that are in communication with a plurality of MFPs. The storage devices are configured so as to be located remotely from the MFPs. When users request assistance from an MFP, the MFP communicates with the storage devices to obtain the appropriate help information. The storage devices are further configured to allow third parties, including users of the MFPs, as well as MFP vendors, to update the help information, enhancing the assistance received by the users in response to a request for help. Should new applications be installed on the MFPs, help information associated with the new applications may be stored by the storage devices and similarly updated.

    Abstract: In general, the invention relates to adding custom applications to multi-function peripheral (MFP) devices. In some embodiments, a proxy device is used to provide registration and routing functions to third-party applications operating on host sites. Thus, the proxy device relieves the MFP device of the processing burden associated with application registration and message routing between multiple custom applications and the MFP device. In some embodiments, user interface (UI) templates are used to customize application displays on the MFP device. By using standard templates, such as templates based on XML, the MFP devices may include minimal support for parsing the templates, thereby reducing the burden placed on the device to accommodate the custom applications.

    Abstract: A video encoder/decoder with spatial scalable compression schemes using spatial sharpness enhancement techniques is disclosed. The video compression scheme introduces a number of various video enhancement techniques on the base layer. A picture analyzer is used to determine the best or the best mix of various video enhancement techniques. The picture analyzer compares the selected mix of video enhancement techniques with the original full resolution input signal to determine for which of the pixels or groups of pixels a residual enhancement layer is required. Parameters defining the selected mix of video enhancement techniques are transmitted to the decoder layer so the same mix of video enhancement techniques can be used in the decoder layer.
