Abstract: A method performed by a storage management computer includes (a) receiving a set of storage profile definitions (SPDs) from an administrator of a data storage system over a user interface, each SPD of the set of SPDs including (1) a storage profile name and (2) a set of storage policies assigned to that SPD, (b) providing the storage profile names from the set of SPDs to an environment management application, the environment management application being configured to manage environments that use storage from the data storage system, (c) in response to providing, receiving a selection of a particular SPD from the environment management application to be used in connection with a particular environment, and (d) provisioning a unit of storage from the data storage system to the particular environment in accordance with the set of storage policies assigned to the particular SPD.

Abstract: A heterogeneous data storage environment includes a first and second data storage system where the first data storage system includes management functionalities that are distinct from the management functionalities included by the second data storage system. A storage system management device is displays an environment management interface that dynamically changes based upon a user's need to manage either the first or second storage system. For example the storage system management device provides a default environment management interface for the first data storage system that includes a custom management display that allows the user to access the management functionalities associated with the first data storage system. The storage system management device dynamically changes the content of the environment management interface to provide a custom management display associated with the user selection of a second data storage system.

Abstract: The method of object searching in a data storage system includes receiving, by an object search machine, a search criteria, the search criteria including a plurality of parameters and storing, by the object search machine, the search criteria as a persistence query having a first query format. In one example, each data file of the target data is assigned to a particular backup process based on the availability of one or more resources and a total size of the target data. The data files of the target data are assigned to the backup processes such that each backup process backs-up a respective portion of the target data, and such that the collection of backup processes that make up a backup operation are completed in a shortened time as a result of reduced resource contention.
