    Abstract: An automatic shutoff valve is provided. The valve is preferably constructed of a check valve (which is normally shut) and a shutoff valve which is open during static, no-flow, operation. Upon initiation of flow, even a drip flow, the check valve opens, and the pressure differential from the inlet to the outlet causes a piston in the shutoff valve to move toward a shut position. As long as the pressure differential stops before the piston closes, the shutoff valve resets to the fully open position. However, if the shutoff valve shuts, it preferably must be manually reset.

    Abstract: The drop-by-drop evaporation of a liquid or solution is controlled by monitoring the disappearance of each successive droplet and by actuating the deposition of the next droplet until the desired volume is deposited. In the case of a solution, non-volatile residue (NVR) is collected on a deposition surface plate as a relatively small mound. One of a variety of methods may be employed to measure the evaporative behavior of each droplet and to key the deposition procedure. The process is preferably carried out employing a clean deposition surface plate that is maintained at or below the boiling point of the particular liquid or solvent being deposited. The environment is preferably controlled so that inadvertent contamination is precluded from interfering, and thus the method permits the automatic, micro-processor controlled evaporation of liquids with the resultant deposition of non-volatile residues from solutions within relatively short periods of time.

The wire contact has two ends, one of the ends having insulation displacing slots for receiving a magnet wire therein, the other of the ends having a resilient contact finger. The assembly further includes a connector housing having a tab contact disposed therein. The tab contact has a poke-in tab and a contact tab for mating with a matable connector. The wire housing is matable with the connector housing, the poke-in tab engages the resilient contact finger to provide electrical connection therebetween and to provide electrical connection between the magnet wire and the matable connector.

    Abstract: A target for use in white balancing video cameras and, in particular, video cameras suitable for endoscopic use. The target is molded from an elastomeric material having the ability to diffuse a substantial portion of light incident upon the target from a video camera. A user may use the target to white balance a video camera by placing the camera directly on the target and adjusting the light intensity of the camera's light source. In the case of an endoscopic camera, the distal tip of the scope (extending from the camera) is placed directly on the target. The user need not be concerned about aiming the camera at a selected white target and holding it a certain distance from the target.

    Abstract: A measurement is carried out on a medium that propagates energy in a selected form by applying energy in the selected form to the medium, the power varying as a function of time in accordance with the elements of two Golay complementary sequences where one kind of element is represented by zero power and the other kind of element is represented by a predetermined non-zero power level and the successive elements of each sequence are applied at uniform intervals. Energy emitted from the medium in the selected form is received, and the variation as a function of time of the power emitted is correlated with the variation as a function of time of the power that was applied. Preferably, the level at which power is applied is varied both directly, in accordance with the elements of the two Golay complementary sequences, and in a derivative fashion, in accordance with the logical complements of the two Golay complementary sequences.

    Abstract: A method of storage deep underground in a protected environment capable of withstanding nuclear blasts while allowing access for maintenance and rapid egress when necessary -- even after exposure to severe environments due to an explosion at or near the surface of the earth. To accomplish these ends, the object or objects to be stored are contained in a closed container of positive buoyancy in quicksand. A shaft is excavated in the earth and filled with sand. The water content of the sand backfill is controlled and maintained at that percentage of saturation which will provide the best compromise between rapidity and ease of container egress on one hand and resistance to hostile surface environments on the other. Means for the introduction of additional water at the bottom of the sand-filled shaft are provided. When the sand column is fluidized by the injection of water at the bottom thereof, quicksand is formed in the shaft and the container can be drawn to the bottom by a tether line.
