In a modified form, the resilience of the ball may be substantially diminished so that it will travel a much less distance than the preferred ball when hit with the same club.

Abstract: The present invention takes the WIFFLE.RTM. BALL baseball into the darkness and allows for the continued play, without need of any complicated or expensive lighting equipment or the like. The standard WIFFLE.RTM. BALL baseball design is retained, and instead of traditional white plastic, a translucent plastic material is employed in the construction of the ball. Inserted into the ball for night play is an activated chemiluminescent light stick, such as those manufactured by, or under license from, the American Cyanamid Company and sold under the trademark CYALUME.RTM.. Abstract: A playball made of translucent plastic and illuminated for play in the dark by an insertable and removable chemi-luminescent device known as a light stick. The weight of the light stick is less than 1% of the weight of the ball. The ball includes a self-closing valve whereby the ball may be inflated and deflated in conventional manner. The light stick just prior to use is activated and then inserted through a preformed passage in the uninflated ball. The inserted light stick is supported radially within the ball by a thickened inwardly extending translucent plastic post that is integral with the ball wall. Subsequent inflating of the ball to playing pressure causes the compressible post to grip the light stick tightly enough to prevent expulsion during use.

Abstract: A practice baseball constructed to curve to a controllable degree when thrown in the manner that a conventional baseball is thrown as a straight ball. The practice baseball is in major part spherical, the balance of the surface being a flat area resulting from the removal of a small segment. The practice baseball has all of the normal characteristics of any conventional similarly manufactured baseball of the same diameter and weight. The practice baseball may be of any selected weight and diameter between the limits recited hereinafter and more specifically, it will be of the same weight and diameter as that of any fully spherical baseball but of greater specific gravity resulting from the reduction in volume due to the removed segment. When hit with a conventional baseball bat, the practice baseball responds as to "crack" sound and the distance traveled like a conventional fully spherical baseball.

A battery powered light source is mounted within the ball in a novel manner which permits ready removal from and re-insertion into the ball for actuating the light switch and replacement of batteries when necessary.
