  • Patent number: 5276070
Abstract: There is disclosed a bone cement composition comprising (a) a liquid component comprising a monomer of an acrylic ester and (b) a powdered component comprising a terpolymer of methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, and styrene. A prepared terpolymer, based on the weight of the powdered component, has between 55 to 89.5% methyl methacrylate, 10 to 40% butyl methacrylate and 0.5 to 5% styrene.

  • Patent number: 5147366
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in reducing the volatilization of the monomer component of bone cement is used after a prosthesis is implanted and throughout the polymerization of bone cement. The apparatus includes a generally annular inflatable sealing member having a centrally located opening therein for fitting over the exposed end of the prosthesis. The sealing member has an outer diameter covering the exposed surface of the bone cement. The sealing member has a deformable surface disposed in a substantially co-planar relationship with the exposed surface of the bone cement. The sealing member is resiliently expandable by inflation and extends beyond the edges of the bone defining the cavity, to seal the bone cavity upon the deformation of the deformable surface thereon. A pump is provided for inflating the sealing member and causing the deformable surface to apply pressure to the exposed surface of the bone cement.

  • Patent number: 4388410
Abstract: A method for thermogravimetrically analyzing a plastic molding composition comprising carbon black and a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer molding resin to determine the carbon black content wherein the method comprises the steps of compounding the molding composition so that the carbon black is uniformly dispersed therein, heating the molding composition in an inert atmosphere to a temperature sufficient to reproducibly thermally decompose the vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer, maintaining the molding composition at the decomposition temperature in an inert atmosphere for a first given time which is long enough so that there is no further significant weight loss, weighing the molding composition to determine the weight loss during the first given time and comparing the weight loss for the first given time with that for samples of known composition analyzed under the same conditions to determined the carbon black content of the molding composition.

  • Patent number: 4378310
Abstract: An improved molding composition having a high thermal stability, including a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer-based resin, sufficient finely divided conductive particles to obtain the desired conductivity, and from 3 to 20 weight percent of the modifying additive BLENDEX 586, which is a three-component blend of polyvinyl chloride, a graft copolymer of acrylonitrile, styrene and polybutadiene, and a copolymer of alpha-methyl styrene and acrylonitrile, as described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,053,800. High density information discs fabricated from this molding composition have improved dimensional stability and increased resistance to environmental temperature changes.
