Patent number: 9751614Abstract: An aircraft has wings configured to twist during flight. Inboard and outboard propulsion devices, such as turbofans or other propulsors, are connected to each wing, and are spaced along the wing span. A flight controller independently controls thrust of the inboard and outboard propulsion devices to significantly change flight dynamics, including changing thrust of outboard propulsion devices to twist the wing, and to differentially apply thrust on each wing to change yaw and other aspects of the aircraft during various stages of a flight mission. One or more generators can be positioned upon the wing to provide power for propulsion devices on the same wing, and on an opposite wing.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2015Date of Patent: September 5, 2017Assignee: The United States of America as Represented by the Administrator of NASAInventors: Nhan T. Nguyen, Kevin Wayne Reynolds, Eric B. Ting

Patent number: 9296474Abstract: Disclosed is a novel adaptive control method and system called optimal control modification with normalization and covariance adjustment. The invention addresses specifically to current challenges with adaptive control in these areas: 1) persistent excitation, 2) complex nonlinear input-output mapping, 3) large inputs and persistent learning, and 4) the lack of stability analysis tools for certification. The invention has been subject to many simulations and flight testing. The results substantiate the effectiveness of the invention and demonstrate the technical feasibility for use in modern aircraft flight control systems.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2013Date of Patent: March 29, 2016Assignee: The United States of America as Represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)Inventors: Nhan T. Nguyen, John J. Burken, Curtis E. Hanson

Patent number: 9227721Abstract: An aerodynamic control apparatus for an air vehicle improves various aerodynamic performance metrics by employing multiple spanwise flap segments that jointly form a continuous or a piecewise continuous trailing edge to minimize drag induced by lift or vortices. At least one of the multiple spanwise flap segments includes a variable camber flap subsystem having multiple chordwise flap segments that may be independently actuated. Some embodiments also employ a continuous leading edge slat system that includes multiple spanwise slat segments, each of which has one or more chordwise slat segment. A method and an apparatus for implementing active control of a wing shape are also described and include the determination of desired lift distribution to determine the improved aerodynamic deflection of the wings. Flap deflections are determined and control signals are generated to actively control the wing shape to approximate the desired deflection.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2012Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: The United States of America as Represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)Inventor: Nhan T. Patent number: 8742960Abstract: A phase digitizing system includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), multiple phase accumulators and a processing device. The ADC generates sample segments of digital signal waveform samples based on an analog composite input signal received in a measurement channel, the composite input signal includes a first signal having a first frequency F1 and a second signal imported from a reference channel having a second frequency F2. The processing device is coupled to the phase accumulators, and digitally processes each sample segment with outputs of the phase accumulators, and continually generates digital phase data The processing device further provides increment values to each of the phase accumulators based on the digital phase data, causing an output of a first phase accumulator to represent an instantaneous phase of the first signal, and an output of a second phase accumulator to represent an instantaneous phase of the second signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2012Date of Patent: June 3, 2014Assignee: Agilent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Daniel White, Nhan T. Nguyen, Janet L. Yun

Patent number: 6933896Abstract: The present invention is a retractable/extendable diversity antenna that provides the appropriate polarization in a horizontal orientation. The antenna structure is placed within a Type II PCMCIA PC card package and may be extended or retracted with one touch. The antenna structure is large enough to provide for the diversity antenna design and may optionally be housed within a PCMCIA Type II PC Card. At least one spring-loaded mechanism is used to extend the antenna structure beyond the PCMCIA PC Card package and to provide stability while the antenna structure is in the extended position. The diversity antenna configuration may consist of either two miniature, planar antenna modules or two etched printed circuit board contours that are spaced as far apart as possible with a minimum separation of a quarter wave length distance in order to provide mitigation to radio multipath fading effects.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2003Date of Patent: August 23, 2005Assignee: 3Com CorporationInventors: Douglas Alan Sward, Brent Madsen, Carlos Rios, Jeffrey Jones, Robert Yarbrough, Nhan T.
