    Abstract: A composition and method for eradicating or suppressing a population of Mediterranean fruit flies or oriental fruit flies which introduces substantially minimal safety risks to humans, agriculture and nontargeted living creatures includes: providing an insecticide composition which includes at least one photoactive dye which is preferably a mixture of Phloxine B and uranine; causing the composition to be ingested by the targeted fruit fly population by spraying or providing the insecticide at a location where the fruit flies feed; and whereby ingestion of the photoactive dye component of the composition by a Mediterranean fruit fly or oriental fruit fly causes a toxic quantity of photons to penetrate within the body of the fly.
