Publication number: 20150002563Abstract: An electronic device is provided with a display such as a liquid crystal display. The display includes a display module having an array of display pixels and a backlight unit configured to provide backlight to the array of display pixels. The array of display pixels includes display pixels in a central region surrounded by display pixels in a border region. To minimize light leakage from the display, display control circuitry drives the display pixels in the central region according to a first gray level mapping function and drives the display pixels in the border region according to a second gray level mapping function. Light leakage reduction structures may be used to reduce the intensity of backlight received by display pixels in the border region relative to the intensity of backlight received by display pixels in the central region.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2013Publication date: January 1, 2015Inventors: Cheng Chen, Nicholas A. Publication number: 20140293188Abstract: An electronic device is provided with a display such as a liquid crystal display. The display includes a liquid crystal display module an array of display pixels. A backlight unit is used to provide backlight illumination to the display module. A shutter module having local dimming elements is used to locally control the amount of light that is transmitted through the display. The local dimming elements can be formed from liquid crystal display structures, polymer-dispersed liquid crystal display structures, photovoltaic material, electrowetting display structures, and/or other suitable light controlling elements. Each local dimming element controls the amount of light that is transmitted through an overlapping region of the array of display pixels. The local dimming elements may be arranged in a uniform array having rows and columns or may be shaped and sized differently and located in specific regions of the display.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2013Publication date: October 2, 2014Inventors: Cheng Chen, Nicholas A. Rundle, Jun Qi, Christiaan A. Ligtenberg, Matthew Casebolt, Dinesh C. Mathew, Victor H. Yin

Publication number: 20140146976Abstract: An electronic device may be coupled to an accessory such as a pair of earphones. The earphones may have noise cancellation features that may be implemented using noise cancellation circuitry in the earphones or in the electronic device. The earphones may have ear presence sensor structures that determine whether speakers in the earphones are present at the ears of a user. In one suitable embodiment, control circuitry in the earphones may be used to adjust noise cancellation circuitry in the earphones based on information from the ear presence sensor structures. For example, the control circuitry may deactivate noise cancellation circuitry in response to receiving information from the ear presence sensor structures indicating that the earphones have been removed from a user's ears. In another suitable embodiment, control circuitry in the electronic device may adjust noise cancellation circuitry in the electronic device based on information from the ear presence sensor structures.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 29, 2012Publication date: May 29, 2014Applicant: Apple Inc.Inventor: Nicholas A. Publication number: 20130335285Abstract: Electronic devices may be provided with conductive structures such as displays and conductive housing walls. Conductive gaskets may be used to form electrical paths between opposing conductive structures in an electronic device. During device assembly, a conductive gasket may be compressed between opposing conductive structures. The conductive gasket may be formed from a conductive gasket wall structure. The conductive gasket wall structure may surround and at least partly enclose an air-filled cavity. Conductive gasket wall structures may be formed from conductive fabric, dielectric sheets coated with metal, or other conductive wall materials. The interior of a conductive gasket may be hollow and completely devoid of supporting structures or may contain internal structures for biasing the conductive gasket wall outwards. Planar gaskets and gaskets with other cross sections may be provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 19, 2012Publication date: December 19, 2013Applicant: Apple Inc.Inventors: David P.
