Patent number: 8815900Abstract: Compositions comprising extracts or isolated or purified compounds from plants of the genus Corydalis provide prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hepatic steatosis, and metabolic syndrome. Corydalis compounds and their derivatives of natural and synthetic origins lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides and increase hepatic LDL receptor expression and activate AMP-activated protein kinase. Specific stereoisomers of Corydalis compounds with lipid lowering activity include 14R-(+)-corypalmine, 14R,13S-(+)-corydaline, 14R-(+)-tetrahydropalmatin, (+)-corlumidin, d-(+)-bicuculline, and (+)-egenine.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2011Date of Patent: August 26, 2014Assignee: CVI Pharmaceuticals LimitedInventors: Haiyan Liu, Junbo Wang, Rui Zhang, Nicholas Cairns, Jingwen Liu

Patent number: 8476462Abstract: Fluorescent cyanine and squaraine dyes are described that can be conjugated to analyte molecules of interest such as peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, RNA, DNA, carbohydrates, polymers and small molecules via a sulfonyl or sulfonamide substituent. The new dyes are made via a novel cyanine dye activation procedure that converts the normally stable, water solubilizing sulfonate substituents into a reactive sulfonyl halides. The sulfonyl halides may be directly conjugated to analytes or can be further converted to more stable reactive sulfonamide handles or to water soluble sulfonamides. The general structure of the new dyes is given below where the central linker is an unsaturated carbon chain or an unsaturated chain containing a squaraine moiety.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2008Date of Patent: July 2, 2013Assignee: Combinix, Inc.Inventor: Nicholas Cairns

Publication number: 20040170561Abstract: Systems and methods for radiographic imaging of tissue using a radio-opaque imaging agent that in one embodiment accumulates intracellularly in tissue in proportion to its functional, or physiological, activity. In one embodiment, the imaging agent is a cell membrane-permeable, radio-opaque, high affinity ligand for an intracellular target. The imaging agent is administered to a patient, and after an accumulation interval, radiographic images are acquired. The imaging agent preferentially accumulates in certain types of tissue and increases its radio-opacity. The tissue being examined is transilluminated by X-ray beams with preselected different mean energy spectra, and a separate radiographic image is acquired during transillumination by each beam. An image processing system may perform a weighted combination of the acquired images to produce a single displayed image. The system and method thus provides a functional image displayed with the anatomical detail and spatial resolution of a radiographic image.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 2, 2004Publication date: September 2, 2004Inventors: Jesse Salb, Nicholas Cairns
