Patent number: 10533578Abstract: A well pump assembly includes a centrifugal pump having a housing with a cylindrical internal side wall. Upper and lower diffusers are located in the housing. A metal-to-metal seal seals an upper end portion of the lower diffuser to the lower end portion of the upper diffuser. The seal also has an outer surface that frictionally engages the internal side wall of the housing. The seal is energized in response to an axial force exerted between the upper and lower diffusers. One version has a metal seal ring located in mating recesses on the outer walls of the diffusers. Another version includes an inner lip on one of the end portions of the diffusers that extends within and deflects an outer lip on the other of the end portions of the diffusers.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2016Date of Patent: January 14, 2020Assignee: Baker Hughes, a GE Company, LLCInventors: Nicholas D. Johnson, Ryan Semple

Publication number: 20160138613Abstract: An electrical submersible pump assembly has modules including a pump, a motor, and a seal section. A threaded connection between at least two of the modules has a first adapter and a second adapter. A collar rotatably carried and axially movable on one of the adapters is in threaded engagement with threads of the other adapter when the threaded connection is made up. First adapter lugs are spaced circumferentially apart from each other around the first adapter. Second adapter slots are spaced circumferentially apart from each other around the second adapter. The lugs slide into the slots while the adapters are brought together. Each of the lugs and each of the slots have side edges that are parallel with the axis. The side edges of the lugs abut the side edges of the slots to prevent rotation of the first and second adapters relative to each other.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 4, 2015Publication date: May 19, 2016Inventors: Ryan P. Semple, Kenneth W. O'Grady, Jason E. Hill, Michael R. Rumbaugh, Nicholas D. Johnson, Scott C. Strattan

Patent number: 8561708Abstract: An apparatus and methods of spacing a tool from walls of tubing are provided as embodiments of the present invention. The apparatus can include a centralizer that is inserted in the tubing, the centralizer having inwardly arched sides or inwardly arched bow springs so that an inner diameter of the centralizer increases from a longitudinal midpoint to a longitudinal end point of the centralizer. The centralizer has a smaller diameter than the tubing so that it can be positioned inside of the tubing downstream of a seating ring in a relaxed position so that when the tool passes through the centralizer, the inwardly arched sides or inverted bow springs expand towards an inner wall of the tubing to centralize and inhibit radial movement of the tool when deployed through the inwardly arched sides of the centralizer.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2011Date of Patent: October 22, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Nicholas D. Johnson, David L. Olson

Patent number: 8439658Abstract: A progressing cavity pump assembly utilizes a reinforced upper section of the stator rubber helix. The pump stator is located at the end of a string of tubing. The reinforced upper section of the stator rubber helix is strong enough, whether reinforced by mechanical means or by strengthening the rubber matrix chemically, so as not to allow the passage of a stop located above or on the top of the pump rotor. The rotor is lowered on a string of rods until the stop above or on top of the rotor lands onto the reinforced upper section of the stator rubber helix. The rotor is then repositioned away from the stator helix a predetermined distance before pump operation begins with rod string rotation.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2009Date of Patent: May 14, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: Nicholas D. Johnson

Patent number: 8333244Abstract: The bottom tag of the present invention comprises a tapered coupling that is secured below the stator housing. In one embodiment the smaller diameter of the coupling is smaller than the rotor minor diameter. In another embodiment the smallest diameter in the coupling tag is smaller than the major diameter of the rotor and longer than one half the rotor pitch, so that no more than one half of a rotor pitch can enter. In either case there are optional side openings to aid flow during operation. The taper in the coupling tag guides coiled tubing through when the rotor is removed to clean up the wellbore below by jetting through the coiled tubing. The taper can also guide measurement equipment through.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2009Date of Patent: December 18, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Nicholas D. Johnson, Douglas W. Berry

Publication number: 20110284238Abstract: Wellbore tubing having an annular seating member and an annular anti-rotation member can be used for one or more types of surface driven submersible pumps. In one embodiment, a stator and a rotor of a surface driven progressing cavity pump can be inserted into the tubing after the tubing is deployed. In one embodiment, a surface driven reciprocating pump can be inserted into the tubing, later withdrawn from the tubing, and then a progressing cavity pump can be inserted into the same tubing.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 23, 2011Publication date: November 24, 2011Applicant: BAKER HUGHES INCORPORATEDInventors: Douglas W.
