    Abstract: The multi-acting valve design features an outer collet around a mandrel with the collet spring biased to a first position where one set of flow ports on one side of a seat with a captive ball can be closed so that the valve acts to prevent fluid loss. When the collet engages a profile and the mandrel is set down the ports above and below the seated ball allow a bypass path around the central path of the mandrel where the ball is seated on a seat. The ports above and below the seated ball communicate into an annular space provided by a sleeve around the mandrel that is supported by the collet assembly that finds temporary support on a profile in a surrounding tubular. The mandrel has an exterior detent to selectively hold the bypass open when the collet assembly is landed on another support to advance it above the mandrel detent.

    Abstract: An apparatus for controlling fluid flow into a wellbore tubular includes a flow control member that selectively aligns a port with an opening in communication with a flow bore of the well bore tubular. The flow control member may have an open position wherein the port is aligned with the opening and a closed position wherein the port is misaligned with the opening. The flow control member moves between the open position and closed position in response to a change in drag force applied by a flowing fluid. A biasing element urges the flow control member to the open or the closed position. The apparatus may include a housing receiving the flow control member. The flow control member and the housing may define a flow space that generates a Couette flow that causes the drag force. The flow space may include a hydrophilic and/or water swellable material.

    Abstract: Wear is reduced in abrasive slurry service at an outlet into an annular space defined by the wellbore and around the tool. In a gravel packing application with a crossover, the slurry exits a central passage and goes into an internal annulus in the tool. Turning vanes that make at least one full turn and that have a height at least partially the height of the annular space are there to impart a swirl movement to at least a portion of the slurry stream. The swirling motion has beneficial effects of reducing turbulence which allows a velocity reduction for a comparable output volume. As a result of the lower turbulence leading to the final exit from the tool into the surrounding annulus, the exit ports experience reduced erosion and longer service life.

    Abstract: A crossover tool that resists the erosive forces of high velocity slurry streams of gravel in downhole fracturing and gravel packing operations employs hardened inserts that protect the inside face of the housing as well as the openings through the crossover housing wall. The inserts have an extending portion that goes through housing openings preferably to the outer surface of the housing. The inserts also have inboard flanged surfaces that preferably abut or overlap to give preferably full inner wall protection to the housing from the flow of abrasive slurry. The inserts can be secured to each other or to the interior of the housing to hold them firmly in place.

In response to the electrical signal, the flow control element activates one or more devices that move a closure element to restrict fluid flow into the wellbore tubular.

    Abstract: A deflection device keeps high velocity gravel slurry flow from directly impinging the wellbore wall in open hole and breaking loose the filter cake coating on the wall or, in a cased hole, prevents the direct impingement of gravel slurry on the casing which can cause wear from erosion. The slurry exist from an intermediate annulus in a crossover that is fitted with movable members that can be pivotally mounted for rotational displacement by the pumped slurry to act as a deflector to prevent or minimize direct impingement on the wellbore wall or casing. When the flow stops the deflectors can pivot back to their original positions. The deflectors can be simply replaced when worn.
