    Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for allowing a mobile device user's location and or identity to be determined. According to one aspect of the disclosure, a method of creating a database comprises providing a first wireless router at a point of sale where a credit card is used in a transaction by a credit card holder, obtaining an identity of the credit card holder during the credit card transaction, establishing a wireless link between the first router and a mobile device carried by the credit card holder, obtaining a Media Access Control (MAC) address associated with the credit card holder's mobile device over the wireless link, correlating the identity of the credit card holder with the MAC address of the credit card holder, and storing the correlated identity and MAC address on a server. In some embodiments, a cellular identifier is obtained rather than a MAC address.

    Abstract: A computer system is provided that allows a computer user to easily and effectively maximize the value and utility of the computer system's display screen. In a preferred embodiment, a laptop computer system includes a keyboard unit that includes a computer keyboard mounted to (or within) a system base. A flat-panel display is pivotally mounted relative to the system base, i.e., the back wall thereof. The flat panel display provides a display screen for displaying computer-generated images. An advantageous mounting assembly is provided proximate the back wall of the system base to join the flat panel display to the system base and permit rotational and pivotal motion of the flat panel display relative to the system base. A receiver or port for use in connecting the laptop computer's processor to an ancillary processing system is advantageously provided proximate a front wall of the system base.

    Abstract: A flow control mechanism is provided for regulating the flow of fluid from a container or vessel, e.g., a plastic bottle containing a fluid such as water or the like. The flow control mechanism may be advantageously employed in a variety of applications where it is desired to dispense and/or access fluids in a controlled manner, e.g., applications wherein a liquid, colloidal system, suspension or the like is to be dispensed/accessed in a controlled manner. The flow control mechanisms are particularly advantageous as animal/pet drinking aids that provide animals/pets with convenient and controlled access to fluid refreshment, e.g., when away from a home-based water bowl. An exemplary control mechanism includes a cap member, overcap and ball captured therebetween. The cap member may be secured to a fluid-containing vessel and used to regulate or control the flow of fluid therefrom. In an alternative embodiment, the overcap defines an angular geometry and a pair of balls are positioned therewithin.

    Abstract: In accordance with the invention, an optical fiber system comprising a laser source an optical fiber including a reflective input end for receiving light from the source is provided with a polarization quarter-wave plate between the laser and the reflective end for minimizing power fluctuations from back reflection. The quarter-wave plate does not prevent back reflection but rather rotates the polarization of the back reflected light so that it does not interfere with the polarized light within the cavity. In an advantageous embodiment the quarter-wave plate is disposed within a receptacle laser package.

To that effect, the manufacturing process according to the invention is characterized in that said metallic platinum is deposited in the form of a plurality of spheroidal microcrystallite clusters each having a size of less than about 100 nanometers, dispersed over the surface of said substrate, and in that said deposited metallic platinum is submitted to a thermal treatment, carried out at a temperature in the range of about 375.degree. to 400 C., so as to enhance the catalytic properties of the platinum on the oxido-reduction of iodine and triiodide 3I.sub.2 +2e.fwdarw.2I.sub.3 in the redox system iodine/iodide.

    Abstract: An image-processing system for perceptual coding of an image is disclosed. Coding is accomplished through an analysis of human visual sensitivity to noise in halftone images and an analysis of one or more signals representing the image to be coded. These analyses determine levels of noise. A first image is encoded so as to produce encoded values without introducing noise which exceeds a determined level of noise. Analysis of human visual sensitivity is carried out under a set of user determined conditions comprising viewing distance and lighting. The encoded image is communicated and decoded to produce representation of the first image for display. As part of displaying the representation of the first image, a halftoning process is carried out. The halftoning process may comprise the interpolation of data values of the representation of the first image as well as the addition of micro-dither to the representation.
