  • Publication number: 20150204808
Abstract: A method and system automatically determines when an electrode add event occurs in an electric arc furnace having a plurality of electrode columns, each carried by an electrode positioning system. Data is received correlating to the electrical current input to the positioning motors of the plurality of electrode columns. Data is also received correlating to a defined operating mode of the electrode positioning systems. Motor electrical current data is captured when the electrode positioning system is in the defined mode and an electrode-add event is thereafter determined when a current spike is identified in the motor input current data.

  • Patent number: 7991039
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the operating parameters of an electric arc furnace having a primary electrical circuit comprising a primary current transformer. The method includes monitoring the furnace's primary current transformer; collecting data therefrom; transmitting the collected data to a server having an operatively connected monitor; and displaying the collected data on the monitor in substantially real-time. The server also collects information about the performance of the furnace from a programmable logic computer and information entered manually by an operator at a furnace monitoring viewer system, which may also be displayed in substantially real-time on the monitor.

  • Publication number: 20070133651
Abstract: A method for controlling the foaming of slag in an electric arc furnace is disclosed. The furnace comprises at least one electrode column. Current is applied to the electrode column, causing an arc to form between the tip of the electrode column and the scrap, melting the scrap. Impurities in the molten scrap metal rise to the surface forming slag. A meter determines the total harmonic distortion associated with the system. If the total harmonic distortion is greater than a predetermined set point, and the scrap metal is sufficiently molten, then a foaming agent is added thereto.
