  • Publication number: 20060023334
Abstract: A medium for use in a tape drive apparatus has a first portion having magnetically stored information and a second portion having a bar code. In one embodiment the bar code is located on a transparent leader segment of the tape medium for optical detection. The bar code is printed on a splicing tape that joins the magnetic portion and the end portion of the magnetic medium.

  • Publication number: 20060023357
Abstract: A tape medium has an identification segment located on a transparent leader segment of the tape medium for optical detection of the segment identification pattern. The segment identification pattern and the medium identification pattern have a predefined spatial relationship, enabling photo-optical detection of the segment identification pattern and reading of the medium identification pattern. The medium identification pattern carries various medium identification information, such as tape manufacturer, tape serial number and a tape medium property.

  • Patent number: 6988817
Abstract: An illumination obscurement device for controlling the obscurement of illumination from a light source which is optimized for use with a rectangular, arrayed, selective reflection device. In a preferred embodiment, a rotatable shutter with three positions is placed between a light source and a DMD. The first position of the shutter is a mask, preferably an out of focus circle. This out of focus circle creates a circular mask and changes any unwanted dim reflection to a circular shape. The second position of the shutter is completely open, allowing substantially all the light to pass. The third position of the shutter is completely closed, blocking substantially all the light from passing. By controlling the penumbra illumination surrounding the desired illumination, DMDs can be used in illumination devices without creating undesirable rectangular penumbras.

  • Patent number: 6990145
Abstract: A method of video motion estimation is described for determining the dominant motion in a video image. The dominant motion is defined by a parametric transform, for example a similarity transform. In the preferred embodiment, selected pairs of blocks in one frame are traced by a block matching algorithm into a subsequent frame, and their change in position determined. From that information, an individual parameter estimate is determined. The process is repeated for many pairs of blocks, to create a large number of parameter estimates. These estimates are then sorted into an ordered list, the list is preferably differentiated, and the best global value for the parameter is determined from the differentiated list. One approach is to take the minimum value of the differentiated list, selected from the longest run of values which fall below a threshold value. Alternatively, the ordered list may be examined for flat areas, without explicit differentiation.

  • Publication number: 20050061549
Abstract: A system for drilling a substantially horizontal borehole, comprises a rotating drill string extending from a surface system to a location in the horizontal borehole, the drill string having a drill bit at a bottom end. A rotary steerable system in the drill string proximate the drill bit is adapted to direct the rotating drill string toward a desired exit point. In another aspect, a method for drilling a substantially horizontal borehole from a surface location to an offshore exit location, comprises drilling a borehole using a rotary steerable system to direct the borehole along a predetermined trajectory toward the exit location. The borehole is reamed from the surface location toward the exit location while recovering a drilling fluid at the surface location.

  • Patent number: 6865008
Abstract: An electronic projection device stores a library of images used for gobos, or light shaping devices, to shape the light. Those gobos each have a specified size. A device adjusts the amount of ligth which passes based on the size information about a gobo. The size of the image is automatically determined, and maximize is used to adjust the amount of opening of a mechanical device, such as a motor driven iris. In this way, the motor driven iris can automatically open to a size that is based on the image information.

  • Publication number: 20040065796
Abstract: A hook clamp has surfaces allowing the clamp to be placed on a support and clamped thereto. The surfaces are such that the clamp can be placed on the support and its weight held by the support prior to tightening. The clamp has a built-in connector for supplying power to the lamp. The clamp has one or more fail-safe holes for securing the clamp to the support with a safety cable. The clamp also has one or more flanges that can be received by a separate mounting bracket, for mounting the clamp and any attached element during storage, staging, or when otherwise not being used.

  • Patent number: 6714879
Abstract: The invention provides a method for operating a controlled stress rheometer in a controlled strain mode to follow a demand strain Xd in a sample having applied thereto a variable demand force Td, inducing an actual strain X including the steps of: monitoring the actual strain X; continuously comparing the actual strain X with the demand strain Xd and calculating the difference; calculating in real time, using an appropriate algorithm, the value of Td necessary to adjust the strain from X to Xd, and adjusting Td to the calculated value so as to effect this strain adjustment. The method may be performed by a computer software algorithm installed in a digital signal processor forming part of the controller system of the rheometer.
