The ropes (1aa) of the new roping (1a) and the ropes (1bb) of the old roping (1b) are joined to each other by splicing the ropes (1aa and 1bb) together at one of their ends and by strengthening the joint by means of compressive sleeves (4, 4a), after which the new roping (1a) is pulled into position by means of the old roping (1b) and the hoisting machine (8) of the elevator.
