  • Publication number: 20110074552
Abstract: A low power device is presented. In some embodiments, the low power device communicates with other devices utilizing transport channels defined from combinations of a plurality of physical channels. In some embodiments, the low power device communicates with other devices utilizing packets that includes a preamble, a header with a sync and frame info, and a frame. The frame, for example, can be a wake-up frame, a request frame, a response frame, or one or more data frames. In some embodiments, the wake-up frame can include a count-down integer indicating the number of wake-up frames before a request frame is sent. In some embodiments, arbitration may be utilized between devices responding to a request. In some embodiments, specific requests commands can be included in the request frame and corresponding response frames are responsive to the commands.

  • Patent number: 7911182
Abstract: One aspect of the invention involves: maintaining a record of how long a circuit operates in each of a plurality of different operating modes thereof, starting from a point in time at which a battery that powers the circuit is replaced; calculating for each of the operating modes as a function of the record a cumulative current drain from the point in time to a current time; and determining as a function of the cumulative current drains whether the battery is subject to a low voltage condition. Another aspect involves: monitoring a voltage of a battery; periodically determining whether the voltage of the battery is subject to a low voltage condition; and maintaining a count of the number of times that the determining results in a determination that the battery is subject to a low voltage condition.

  • Patent number: 7808383
Abstract: A support includes a base having an outwardly extending projection with a passageway therethrough, and having a tag receiving portion configured to removably support a tag on the base adjacent one end of the passageway. A different arrangement involves a tag that includes a housing having an opening therethrough and having an annular surface around the opening, an annular gasket engaging the annular surface, and circuitry within the housing having a sensor located in the region of the opening and having a transmitter that can transmit wireless signals. A method includes defining a passageway that provides fluid communication between an interior and exterior of a container, supporting a tag on the exterior of the container, and causing the tag to sense, at a location in the region of an end of the passageway, a condition within the container.

  • Patent number: 7768392
Abstract: Systems and methods provide for determining a distance between a signpost and a tag and for locating a tag using multiple signposts. The system uses a signal received at a tag from a signpost, and from them measures the signal strength of the signal with respect to one or more antennas on the tag. The system calculates an RSSI using the measured signal strength, from which a distance can be determined between the signpost and the tag. The system also uses signals received from multiple signposts, to measure multiple signal strengths, resulting in multiple distance determinations corresponding to the various signposts, thereby establishing a location for the tag.

  • Patent number: 7688181
Abstract: A tag can switch between first and second modes of operation, and consumes less power in the first mode. In the second mode, the tag can receive wireless signals having successive first and second portions. If the tag identifies a repetitive pattern of the wireless signals, the tag ignores the second portions of the signals. Otherwise the tag receives the second portions. In another embodiment, while in the second mode, the tag can receive wireless signals having successive first, second and third portions. The tag switches between the first and second modes at one rate until it detects the first portion, and then switches at a higher rate until it detects the second portion, and then stays in the second mode and receives the third portion.

  • Patent number: 7629879
Abstract: A tag stores information identifying the sequence in which it received wireless signpost signals from different signposts. In another configuration, a tag maintains data identifying a group of signposts that are to be treated as equivalent. In yet another configuration, wireless signpost signals transmitted by each of a plurality of signposts all contain the same signpost code. In still another configuration, a signpost has an interface through which a signpost code of the signpost can be selectively set.

  • Patent number: 7570176
Abstract: A tag can transmit a tag signal, and responds to receipt of a wireless signpost signal by determining whether the signpost that generated the signal is currently active. When the signpost is respectively determined to be active and inactive, the tag respectively includes and excludes from the tag signal an information portion that relates to the signpost that generated the received signpost signal. In another configuration, a tag has first and second antennas, receives wireless signpost signals through at least one of the antennas, and responds to receipt of a signpost signal containing antenna select information by causing a selected one of the first and second antennas to be disabled and the other of the first and second antennas to receive wireless signpost signals.

  • Patent number: 7570150
Abstract: A tag has circuitry that can transmit and receive wireless signals, including receipt of first and second wireless signals that are different. The circuitry responds to a predetermined event by inhibiting wireless transmissions for up to a selected time interval, while waiting for receipt of one of the first and second wireless signals. The circuitry responds to receipt during the selected time interval of one of the second wireless signals before receipt of one of the first wireless signals by continuing to inhibit wireless transmissions, and responds to expiration of the selected time interval without receipt of either of the first and second wireless signals by transmitting a selected wireless signal.

  • Patent number: 7541942
Abstract: A tag receives a wireless signpost signal that contains a signpost code, converts the signpost code into location information representative of a physical location of a signpost that transmitted the received signpost signal, and transmits a wireless tag signal that includes the location information. In a different configuration, a tag receives a wireless signpost signal that includes a signpost code, and determines whether the signpost that generated the received signpost signal is a replacement for a different signpost. If it is a replacement, the tag transmits a wireless tag signal containing an information portion that relates to the signpost replaced by the signpost that generated the received signpost signal.

  • Publication number: 20090102659
Abstract: A tag has a sensor that can detect a condition in the region of the tag. The tag effects an operational adjustment relating to the sensor based on sensor configuration information in a received wireless signal. According to a different aspect, a tag can receive wireless signals containing positioning information, and wireless signals containing location information indicating with a first accuracy the current location of the tag. The further signals conform to one of a radio frequency identification communication protocol, a cellular telephone network communication protocol, a satellite communication protocol, and a wireless computer network communication protocol. The tag determines from the positioning information with a second accuracy greater than the first accuracy the current location of the tag, the tag being responsive to the location information for more rapidly effecting the determination with the second accuracy.

  • Publication number: 20090102660
Abstract: A tag has a circuit portion that functions as a reader capable of wireless communication with other tags. According to a different aspect, a tag has a circuit portion with first and second modes, the circuitry consuming less power in the second mode than the first mode, and exiting the second mode only in response to an act by a human. According to yet another aspect, a tag can receive wireless communications conforming to one of a cellular telephone network communication protocol, a satellite communication protocol, and a wireless computer network communication protocol. The tag responds to receipt of a predetermined wireless signal conforming to the one protocol by carrying out one of first action that includes causing the tag to enter an electronically secure state, or a second action that includes causing the tag to exit the electronically secure state.
