  • Patent number: 7109877
Abstract: A fault condition monitoring apparatus for use with a fuse cutout includes a housing operable to be supported by the fuse cutout. The housing has first and second contacts operable to make electrical contact with fuse contacts on the fuse cutout when the housing is supported by the fuse cutout. A current sensor is mounted inside the housing and is connected to the first and second contacts. A signaling device is coupled to the current sensor and is operable to cause a signal to be produced when current sensed by the current sensor meets a criterion.

  • Patent number: 6812713
Abstract: An internal fault indicator for an electrical device is triggered by a sudden increase in pressure as occurs when an insulation failure creates an electric arc. The heat released in the arc is transferred onto the surrounding volume causing localized overheating, vaporization and decomposition of the insulating material. The resulting pressure surge moves a diaphragm. The movement of the diaphragm releases a spring driven plunger from a barrel which extends through the housing of the electrical device. Prior to activation the plunger is held in an “armed” position by a retaining pin. Upon triggering, the plunger is pushed by the spring until it protrudes from the housing to provide a visual signal of the internal fault. A pressure relief valve may be integrated with the internal fault indicator.

  • Patent number: 5078078
Abstract: A warning indicator provides an indication that a transient over-pressure condition has occurred in a transformer. The indicator takes into account small or slow pressure changes and only indicates pressure surges. The internal arcing warning indicator comprises an opening in a casing of a transformer, a movable piston over the opening with a retainer to retain the piston over the opening, the piston having at least one small aperture therein to allow slow increases and decreases of pressure within the transformer without the piston moving, and an indicator attached to the piston, the indicator providing an indication that the piston has moved a predetermined distance and retaining the indication until reset.
