  • Patent number: 5555806
Abstract: The invention provides a roller assembly including a roller for a damping unit or an inking unit in a rotary printing machine, which is supported relative to rollers via a pressure mechanism with springs, for example, a pressure spring and a leaf spring, so that the weight of the roller is balanced by the leaf spring. In this way, the roller has the same nip widths as the adjacent rollers. In addition, the roller is equipped with a holding mechanism, through which a bedding of the roller that has been set can be clamped, so that the roller has a fixed position during the printing process. The holding mechanism includes, for example, a pneumatic cylinder, a gripping lever or an adjusting screw.

  • Patent number: 4676159
Abstract: To eliminate space requirements of an additional separating device to cut a torn web of paper in a rotary printing machine, a paper cutter is integrated into the circumference of a guide or transport roller (1) in the form of a knife (12) smoothly merging with the circumference (2) of the roller (1), but pivotable outwardly of the circumference (compare FIGS. 2 and 3) if a "torn paper" condition is sensed. In normal operation, a cam (6) rotates with the roller (1) being carried along, for example by friction, by a stub shaft (4). Upon sensing a "torn paper" condition, an electromagnet (20) pulls a latch (17) in engagement with a ratchet stop (16) on the cam, inhibiting rotation of the cam with the roller (1) and causing a cam follower (8) to rise on a land (7) of the cam, thereby pivoting the knife out of circumferential position with respect to the roller and severing the paper web (5).

  • Patent number: 4598640
Abstract: In a web-fed offset rotary press printing unit comprising four cylinders (2-5), in order to move the two inner cylinders, for instance blanket cylinders (3, 4), apart from one another without having to move the outer cylinders (2, 5), the cylinder trunnions (6, 7) of the inner cylinders (3, 4) are positioned on double eccentric bushes (8, 9; 10, 11). By means of tie rods (16-19), all the pairs of eccentric bushes (8, 9; 10, 11) are pivoted in common about the same angle, resulting in a linear movement in opposite directions (P or P') by the inner cylinders (3, 4) with respect to the straight line (G) on which the four cylinders are disposed.

  • Patent number: 4549485
Abstract: To prevent damage to a printing cylinder, typically the blanket cylinder of rotary offset printing machine, upon tearing of a paper web, which usually occurs within a dryer, a paper web seizing apparatus is positioned downstream of the last printing station. The apparatus includes a roller (15) which is driven at the speed somewhat higher than the linear speed of the paper web by a belt drive (20,21,22) from a friction wheel (18) and held out-of-engagement with the other roller (3) of the pair by a latching mechanism (24, 25, 26--FIG. 2). Upon sensing of a tear, the electromagnetic (26) of the latching mechanism permits a spring (23) to disengage the first roller (15) from the friction drive (18), the roller continuing to rotate due to inertia and engaging the web (A) and then being driven by the positive drive (8,9,10) of the first roller, thus wrapping any torn web about the first roller and preventing damage to the printing cylinders of the printing machine.

  • Patent number: 4329922
Abstract: To provide for self-alignment in axial as well as circumferential direction of bearing cups holding a fixed shaft of a cylinder, in which the cups are selectively rotatably adjustable and held by axial bolts extending into bearing blocks, the shaft ends or stubs (6, 7) have cross pins (17, 18) extending transversely thereto. The bearing cups (6, 7) are half-cylindrical and, upon positioning of one of the cups, while leaving the other one to be rotatable, engagement of the respective cross pin with the positioned cup will permit alignment of through-bores extending at right angles to the axis of the shaft through the shaft and into the bearing cup for attachment by an attachment bolt (15, 16).
