    Abstract: A thin film phosphor screen structure includes a light-transmitting substrate layer, a phosphor layer on the substrate layer formed with a plurality of parabolic-shaped cells containing phosphor material, and a reflective layer coated over the parabolic phosphor cells for reflecting light generated in the cells for transmission externally through the substrate layer. The parabolic cells are configured corresponding to the desired resolution of the display and to critical angle of diffraction for the phosphor/substrate interface. An anti-reflection coating may be applied at the phosphor/substrate interface. The phosphor layer may have a graded dopant structure or an impressed electric field for causing generated electrons to migrate toward the focal plane of the parabolic phosphor cells.

    Abstract: An optical lens has a blackened layer in its outer surface which extends to a depth sufficient to substantially eliminate reflected stray light in the lens. The blackened layer is formed by causing hydrogen under pressure to react for a predetermined time and temperature with a metal oxide of the optical material thereby leaving the metal oxide in its reduced form in the lens. Some of the oxides are reduced completely, leaving the metal in its elemental form in the layer.

    Abstract: An image intensifier tube has a faceplate formed of optical material. The outer surface of the faceplate has light receiving and light transmitting surfaces and a layer of a reduced metal oxide material for reducing stray light which is transmitted into the faceplate and reflected off of internal surfaces thereof. The layer has a blackened appearance and is formed by reducing the metal oxide of the faceplate material with hydrogen at a predetermined pressure and temperature to cause the blackening to reach a depth sufficient to reduce transmission of stray light therethrough.
