  • Patent number: 7123936
Abstract: A cellular telephone includes an internally integrated digital entertainment module. The telephone includes a transceiver unit and a headset which is connected to the transceiver unit by wired or wireless link. The entertainment module includes an interchangeable ROM and/or expansion RAM for storing music or other audio signals for playback through the telephone's headset. Music or other audio signals in digitized form is stored in the interchangeable ROM or is loaded into the expansion RAM from a CD player, computer, or other source of digitized audio signals. Under control of the cellular telephone's microprocessor, the digitally stored audio signal is played back through the telephone's headset. The entertainment module may be located in the transceiver unit, a removable battery pack, or in a separate adapter.

  • Patent number: 6519470
Abstract: A method for determining when a wireless communications device's warranty period begins uses the wireless communications device's first use date as a proxy for the start of the warranty period. After being powered-on, the wireless communications device checks a non-volatile warranty registration status-flag. If that flag indicates that the wireless communications device has not previously registered, the wireless communications device sends a unique identifier, such as a serial number, to a warranty registration center. The warranty registration center stores the identifier with an associated registration date stamp. The wireless communications device then changes the warranty registration status flag to indicate that the device has been registered for warranty purposes. Once this automated warranty registration is complete, the wireless communications device proceeds with normal operation. The recorded first use date may be used as the start of the warranty period.

  • Patent number: 6163508
Abstract: The initial portion of an audio work received from an audio source is temporarily buffered so as to allow a user to make a recording of an audio work, including the initial portion of the audio work, even when the decision to record is made after the audio work has begun. In one embodiment, the incoming data stream representing the audio work is monitored for the presence of a sound gap, indicating the beginning of a new audio work. A DSP compresses the data, preferably according to perceptual coding technique such as MPEG-3 or Windows Media Technology 4.0, and forwards the compressed data to a short term memory buffer, such as a simple FIFO buffer, for temporary storage. If the user initiates a recording procedure before buffer is filled, a central controller pulls the compressed data from the buffer and transfers it to long term memory. If the user fails to act before the buffer fills, the buffer is flushed, and the process prepares for the next audio work.

  • Patent number: 4949395
Abstract: The present invention relates to a cellular mobile radio system. Each cell includes a base station, a plurality of mobile stations and radio channels, for transmitted digital information between the base station and the mobile stations. More precisely the invention concern a method and an arrangement for dynamically allocating time slots to connections on the radio channels, in order to increase the capacity on the radio channels. The maximum number of simultaneous connections on the radio channels with be more than the available number of the time slots per frame. When there are more connections established on a first and a second radio channel than time slots per frame, the connections share the available time slots in accordance with a determined multiframe time slot allocation scheme known to the base station and the mobile stations. The base station is selecting one of the time slot allocation schemes in dependence on the speech activity on the two radio channels.

  • Patent number: 4047151
Abstract: A method for effecting error protecting coding in digitally modulated analog information as a function of the quality of transmission characteristics in the communication channel is provided in which the error code is embodied in the source code word, such as by reducing the number of significant bits and substituting error protecting code bits. This results in the maintenance of transmission capacity while providing the space needed for the redundant signals required to preclude error.
