  • Patent number: 6138347
Abstract: A conductive strap configured to attach to a circuit board containing a component sensitive to electronmagnetic interference (EMI) and to slidably contact an enclosure having a conductive internal surface can reduce or eliminate EMI in an electronic device. The strap is positioned on the circuit board to shield the sensitive component from EMI. Slidable contact between the shielding strap and the enclosure internal surface renders the strap suitable for almost any enclosure configuration without any design modification.

  • Patent number: 5914942
Abstract: A satellite-cellular communication system includes a satellite based transceiver for transceiving two-way communications originated at a user terminal. As a part of call set up, a controller determines whether the user terminal should transmit in the uplink in either a wide band mode of operation or in a narrow band mode of operation. The controller then specifies to the user terminal the mode of operation through the transceiver.Whether the user terminal transmits in the uplink in a wide band or in a narrow band mode depends upon factors including the type of device, channel usage and efficiency in the channels to and from the satellite transceiver and the signal quality of the signals received at the transceiver.

  • Patent number: 5890074
Abstract: A modular unit having a telecommunications component, a switching circuit, and a headset link is adapted for connection with a host electronic device. The headset link of the modular unit communicates with a module link in a headset. The headset also contains earphones or a speaker, a microphone, and a control panel in electrical connection with the module link of the headset. The speaker, microphone, and control panel of the headset communicate with the headset link of the modular unit through the module link in the headset. The switching circuit of the modular unit controls whether the headset link of the module is in electrical connection with the telecommunications component of the modular unit or an electronic audio component of the host electronic device.

  • Patent number: 5812968
Abstract: An apparatus for improving the link margin of a communication link includes a variable rate vocoder which decreases the output bit stream rate it produces so as to reduce the amount of information having to be transmit in the communication link. In one embodiment, the variable rate vocoder includes a plurality of vocoder portions, each of which produces a different bit stream rate. The selector is used for selecting among the output bit streams produced by each vocoder. In another embodiment, a logic device is coupled to the output of the vocoder. The logic device, upon receipt of a control signal, truncates the less important bits. The method for improving link margin includes reducing the vocoder output rate thereby reducing the amount of data being transmit in an communication link. The method also includes using increased error correction coding and transmitting at increased per bit power levels to increase link margin.

  • Patent number: 5778322
Abstract: Transceiver frequency and power level are allocated in a radio communications system which includes a base station, a radio personal communications terminal, and a radio personal communications network, by using a smart card to store frequency and power level indicators. The stored indicators are used to set personal communications terminal-to-base station communications. The smart card may be removably coupled to the base station or the personal communications terminal. Since the smart cards are issued by the radio personal communications system carrier, appropriate frequencies and power levels can be assigned for base stations, to minimize same channel interference with the radio personal communications network.
