  • Patent number: 6907271
Abstract: A method for reducing interference in a wireless system, and a system for performing the method. The wireless system should include at least two, and preferably four, beam formers and a plurality of mobile units. The method includes the steps of transmitting beams B1, B2, B3 and B4 into first, second, third and fourth beam areas, respectively. At least two sub-areas are defined within each of the first, second, third and fourth beam areas based upon the degree of overlap with adjacent beam areas, whereby each of the beam areas includes at least one overlapping sub-area and at least one non-overlapping sub-area. The method further includes coding signals of the beams B1, B2, B3 and B4 for receipt by a particular mobile unit based upon which one of the sub-areas that the particular mobile unit is located within.

  • Patent number: 6778499
Abstract: A method and apparatus for smoothing bit rate transitions in a bursty input data stream. The method includes the steps of receiving the input data stream in a buffer, periodically measuring the occupancy level of the buffer and withdrawing the contents of the buffer at an output rate. In a simple embodiment of the invention, the output rate is increased if the buffer occupancy level is above a threshold occupancy level and decreased if the buffer occupancy level is below a second threshold intensity, where both threshold occupancy levels are dependent on the current output rate. The output rate is made dependent on the buffer occupancy level, which allows the output data stream to have smoother data rate transitions than does the input data stream. As a result, there is little degradation of service quality to other users of the system upon establishing the bursty connection and problems related to convergence of power levels across the entire system are practically eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6704328
Abstract: In a wireless communications system, after a high data rate user is admitted and a supplemental channel is assigned to the user, a control message is sent to a receiver to communicate for power ramp-up and ramp-down profiles. The control message contains parameters of a data rate, a starting time and a duration of time as group in assigned fields in the message which is provided by a control signal source. In response to the control message, a controller provides a rate controllable signal with reference to the parameters of the control message to a data encoder. A bursty input data stream is fed to a buffer. The data encoder withdraws the data from the buffer in response to the rate controllable signal. The bit rate transitions in the bursty input data stream are smoothed with reference to the parameters. There is provided an output data stream having smoother data rate transitions than the input data stream.

  • Patent number: 6603746
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer-readable storage medium for use in a communications system wherein the transmit power of a wireless link is adjusted so that link performance meets a target level. The method consists of dynamically adjusting the target level as a function of the traffic characteristics of the link. It may be executed at a base station or mobile unit. To perform the method, the apparatus or storage medium (a) computes a threshold instantaneous performance parameter as a first function of a measured instantaneous performance parameter, a measured instantaneous bit rate and at least one target error performance parameter; and (b) generates a power control command based upon a second function of the measured instantaneous performance parameter and the threshold instantaneous performance parameter. This provides a smoothing effect of the interference induced to other users and may result in increased cell capacity.
