  • Patent number: 11871469
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In some systems, a user equipment (UE) may support multiple radio access technologies (RATs). The UE may communicate using both a Long Term Evolution (LTE) connection for control signaling and a New Radio (NR) connection for data signaling in a non-standalone (NSA) mode. However, if the UE uses a data rate below a threshold, the NR connection may be inefficient. To reduce processing overhead, the UE may fall back to using the LTE connection for data communications. For example, the UE may delay or abort adding an NR connection based on the data rate. In some examples, the UE may transmit a fake report or a fake uplink message to trigger dropping an NR connection. Additionally or alternatively, the UE may indicate a preferred mode of operation to the network indicating a preference for communicating data via an LTE connection.

  • Patent number: 11864113
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A data layer at a user equipment (UE) may provide information associated with an uplink message to a modem power manager to determine whether to keep resources which are brought up by the scheduler or to power them off for transmitting the uplink message. For example, the data layer may indicate a radio access technology, a subscriber identifier, and a bearer type associated with the uplink message, which may enable the modem power manager to identify which radios to wake up (e.g., or avoid putting to sleep). Utilizing the information may enable the modem power manager to determine whether the wakeup is related to uplink data, acquire information to support the wakeup with resources indicated by the information, and avoid putting resources to sleep if the scheduled and the unscheduled wakeup resource requirements match.

  • Patent number: 10497369
Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling a portable computing device (“PCD”) are disclosed. In an example method, an always on processor (AoP) of a voice recognition module of the PCD receives a voice command. The AoP determines, without decoding the received voice command, that the received voice command corresponds to a previously determined keyword. The AoP retrieves context data associated with the previously determined keyword. The AoP acts on the voice command using the context data, including in some embodiments automatically triggering a fast dormancy of a communications channel.

  • Publication number: 20180317174
Abstract: The disclosure generally relates to power savings in a power-sensitive device tethered to another device over a wireless link. For example, a first wireless device may establish a wireless link with a second device such that the first wireless device is tethered to the second device over the wireless link. The first wireless device may determine that a scheduled untethering of the wireless link with the second device is impending and reduce a duty cycle associated with one or more procedures to reestablish the wireless link in response to determining that the wireless link with the second device has been lost. The duty cycle may be reduced for a period that substantially corresponds to an expected duration of the scheduled untethering of the wireless link.

  • Patent number: 9125134
Abstract: Out of band (OOB) communication facilitates femtocell operation. One or more proximity agent provides out of band communication with nodes (e.g., mobile client devices) to provide assistance in or otherwise facilitate femtocell discovery, reselection, and/or interference mitigation. Out of band communication techniques provide for low power discovery, association, and communication as compared to corresponding femtocell or cellular network communication techniques. An OOB proximity agent is provided in association with a femtocell to provide transmit power level control with respect to the femtocell. In operation, if a client device searches for and finds an OOB proximity agent, it will find a femtocell, thereby avoiding a need to aggressively search for femtocells.

  • Patent number: 8964611
Abstract: A novel power conservation scheme is provided for conserving power in a wireless client terminal with an established communication session. While in a connected mode, the client terminal may receive data for the communication session via a data channel from an access point. During periods of inactivity over the data channel, the client terminal may switch to a lowered power mode, where the client terminal discontinuously monitors a control channel and does not monitor the data channel. The access point is informed of the operating mode of the client terminal. If a data resume indicator is received over the control channel, the client terminal switches back to the connected mode and resumes the communication session by receiving additional data over the data channel.

  • Patent number: 8838117
Abstract: Systems, methods, devices, and computer program products are described for supporting macrocell-to-femtocell hand-ins of active macro communications for mobile access terminals. A femto-proxy system is provided including a femtocell and an out-of-band (OOB) proxy. While the femtocell may be addressed by the macro network according to a potentially non-unique identifier (e.g., its PN offset), the OOB proxy is addressable according to a unique OOB identifier (e.g., a Bluetooth device address, BD_ADDR). When the mobile access terminal is in proximity to the femto-proxy system, it detects the OOB proxy and communicates the unique OOB identifier to the core network via the macro network (e.g., as part of a measurement report). The OOB identifier is mapped (e.g., in the core network) to the femtocell, allowing the core network to uniquely identify the appropriate target femtocell for active hand-in.

  • Patent number: 8761064
Abstract: Proxy discovery for mobile networks having cooperative multiradio devices is provided through short range discovery and assistance from the network. In some aspects, a dedicated message is sent in response to a request from the client. The dedicated message includes a proxy list. The client uses the proxy list to discover those proxies on the list. Other aspects provide for the proxy list to be included in broadcast messages from the network. Thus, clients receive the broadcast messages and extract the proxy list for discovery purposes. Other aspects provide for the client to detect all of the wireless devices in the area and send a list to the network. The network responds with a sub-list of those proxies that are available to the client. In each such aspect, when the client discovers the available proxies, it transmits a list of the proxy ID of the discovered proxies to the network.

  • Patent number: 8717987
Abstract: Systems, methods, devices, and computer program products are described for mitigating macrocell interference during femtocell discovery in a wireless communications system. In one example, a mobile device may be camped on a macrocell. A femtocell transmits out-of-band (OOB) discovery signals to, or receives OOB band discovery signals from, the mobile device to facilitate presence detection. The femtocell may also be configured to use various techniques to transmit in-band beacon bursts (e.g., low or high power beacon bursts) to the mobile device in the macrocell frequency range to trigger the mobile device to perform an inter-frequency scan for cell reselection. The femtocell may transmit communications signals to the mobile device in a femtocell frequency range (different from the macrocell frequency range) after the mobile device has discovered and selected the femtocell.

  • Patent number: 8639273
Abstract: A power conservation method and system are provided for conserving power in client terminals by using a partitioned proxy server. The client terminal, having low-power and high-power communication interfaces, may power down its high-power communication interface to conserve power. Prior to shutting off its high-power communication interface, the client terminal may assign a partitioned proxy server to act as its proxy. The partitioned proxy server may include remote and local paging proxies which communicate with each other over an IP network. The remote paging proxy receives paging requests from an access point or the communication network and forwards it to the local paging proxy. The local paging proxy then forwards the paging message to the client terminal via a low-power communication interface. Upon receipt of the paging message via its low-power communication interface, the client terminal may power up its high-power communication interface and directly respond to the paging message.

  • Patent number: 8566594
Abstract: Trust establishment in short range protocol pairing between client and proxy devices includes a first aspect in which application level security is used to encrypt all packets transmitted between the client and proxy. An application-based security derives a public key from the General Bootstrapping Architecture (GBA) and used that public key to generate an encryption key in an AES encryption algorithm. A second aspect provides for out of band security to be used to establish short range protocol pairing. In this second aspect, the client and proxy exchange identification information over a third party network that is out of band to the short range protocol. With this identification information exchanged out of band, the client and proxy may establish pairing in the short range protocol.

  • Patent number: 8527017
Abstract: Page monitoring in a proxy relationship is optimized through creation of a new page occasion (PO) or paging frame (PF). The new PO/PF includes pages for each client-proxy relationship. Once the new PO/PF is communicated to the proxy, the proxy monitors for the pages of each client by monitoring a single PO/PF. Depending on the embodiment implemented, the network will either continue to also transmit pages during original PO or cease such transmission. On detection of a failed link between the proxy and client, the client may begin to monitor the original pages in such networks, or will begin monitoring using the new PO/PF until the network notifies the client that the state has changed.

  • Patent number: 8515500
Abstract: A scheme is provided for conserving power in client terminals and/or reducing latency in wireless systems by using a proxy device. The client terminal may have a primary communication interface for communications with an access node and a secondary communication interface to communicate with the proxy device. The client terminal may indicate to the access node a short cycle rate for monitoring its signaling/control channel(s). The client terminal may the power off its primary communication interface without informing the access node. Prior to powering off its primary communication interface, the client terminal may assign the proxy device to act as its proxy and monitor the signaling/control channel with the access node. The proxy device monitors the signaling/control channel(s) according to the indicated short cycle rate. Upon detection of a message for the client terminal, the proxy device forwards the message to the client terminal via a secondary communication interface.

  • Patent number: 8442475
Abstract: A power conservation scheme is provided for conserving power in an access terminal that includes a dedicated proxy circuit, a receiver/transmitter chain, and/or a baseband processor. The baseband processor is adapted to determine when a wireless communication link with an access network has been inactive for at least a threshold amount of time. If such inactivity is ascertained, the baseband processor sends a proxy request to the proxy circuit. Upon receiving such proxy request, the proxy circuit monitors a data, control, and/or paging channel on behalf of the access terminal while the baseband processor is powered down. If a signal is received for the access terminal over the monitored channel, then a wake-up signal is sent to the baseband processor to cause it to power up and monitor a data channel. Upon receiving a response from the baseband processor, the proxy circuit may stop operating as a proxy.
