  • Patent number: 7356351
Abstract: A method and apparatus for disabling the communication functionality (i.e., disabling the transmission and/or reception of RF signals) of an integrated device, while still providing access to the local functionality of such device. A control and select function, such as a switch that is implemented by hardware or software or a combination thereof, is provided in an integrated device to allow the end user of the device to access the local data processing functionality of the device, even while the wireless communication functionality of such device is disabled.

  • Patent number: 7171463
Abstract: A system for, and method of, denoting and communicating with a computer network site and a computer network incorporating the system or the method. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) an address parser that makes a determination of whether the site is a mobile site from an address of the site and (2) a communications manager that manages communication with the site based on the determination.

  • Patent number: 7011343
Abstract: A welded pipe joint having reduced internal stresses comprises a pipe, a socket fitting, and an annular weld. The end surface of the fitting is chamfered, preferably in a concave profile, so that the weld profile subtends an angle of from about 100 degrees to about 120 degrees, rather than the customary 90 degrees. The pipe has no dam or other protuberance to confine the bead of added metal. Prior to welding, the fitting may have an annular lip immediately surrounding the surface of the pipe and may also have a ring spaced from the lip. The ring may be integral with the fitting and spaced from the lip by thin, radially spaced metal bars or may be separate from the fitting.

  • Patent number: 6980790
Abstract: For use in a wireless voice network, an alarm system and method of operation thereof. In one embodiment, the alarm system includes: (1) a local transceiver that, in response to a received stimulus, establishes an out-of-band wireless link of diminished bandwidth to a wireless central monitoring station in the wireless voice network and (2) a local controller, coupled to the transceiver for bidirectional communication therewith, that receives commands from the wireless central monitoring station via the wireless link.

  • Patent number: 6535729
Abstract: A system for, and method of, processing a wireless file in a computer network and a communications infrastructure incorporating the system or the method. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) an examiner that receives at least a portion of the wireless file and identifies a filename thereof and (2) a file processor that modifies a content of the wireless file based on the filename.

  • Patent number: 6154740
Abstract: A system for, and method of, displaying a sorted list on a display device and a computer incorporating the system or the method. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a sort-point identifier that scans a key field of a sorted list and determines sort-points in the key field and (2) a key field marker, associated with the sort-point identifier, that associates marks with the key field based on the sort-points and causes at least a portion of the sorted list and the associated marks to be displayed on the display device.

  • Patent number: 5390326
Abstract: A local area network having fault detection and recovery and a method for detecting and recovering from faults in a local area network are disclosed. The network has modules interconnected by a token bus implemented by a pair of redundant cable systems. All of the modules are agent modules and one of the modules also serves as a master module. Each agent module periodically transmits an agent heartbeat signal on each of its cables. Each module monitors all of the agent heartbeat signals from all of the other modules. When a fault is detected by a module, such as missed agent heartbeat signals from another module, the module applies agent rules to determine if and how the fault should be reported. The agent module reports the fault to the master module. The master module collects fault reports from the agent modules, applies a set of master rules to the agent fault reports, and generates a master failure report.

  • Patent number: 4945393
Abstract: A floating gate memory device comprises a channel for conducting carriers from source to drain, a semiconductor heterostructure forming a potential well (floating gate) for confining carriers sufficiently proximate the channel so as to at least partially deplete it, and a graded bandgap injector region between the control gate and the floating gate for controlling the injection of carriers into and out of the potential well. Also described is a three element memory cell, including the memory device and two FETs, which operates from a constant, non-switched supply voltage and two-level control voltages. Arrays of memory devices may also be used to detect light in a variety of applications such as imaging.

  • Patent number: 4943540
Abstract: A method for selectively etching higher aluminum concentration AlGaAs in the presence of lower aluminum concentration AlGaAs or GaAs, preferably at room temperature. The AlGaAs is first cleaned with a solution of NH.sub.4 OH and rinsed. The AlGaAs is then etched in a solution of HF. If photoresist is used on the AlGaAs, the photoresist may first be baked to increase the adhesion of the photoresist to the AlGaAs and to "toughen" the photoresist to reduce undercutting thereof. Agitation is applied to the AlGaAs or the etchant to assist in the uniform etching of the AlGaAs.
