  • Publication number: 20090040337
Abstract: A method for enhancing wide dynamic range in images is disclosed. The method comprises acquiring at least two images of a scene to be imaged, the images acquired using different exposure times. For a first image an illumination mask is constructed corresponding to the illumination in the scene, comprising a set of continuous weight values distinctively identifying respective areas of pixels of high or low illumination, over-exposed or underexposed with respect to a predetermined threshold illumination value, assigning one of the weight values to each pixels, whereas other weight value is assigned to other pixels of the other images. A spatial low-pass filter is used to smooth border zones on the illumination mask, thus assigning pixels in the border zones new continuous weight values in a range between the weight values.

  • Publication number: 20080136953
Abstract: The present invention is an electronic imaging device and method of expanding its dynamic range. The invention comprises modifying the imaging device by providing a comparator and reset trigger circuit located at or near the site of each of the pixels. The comparator triggers a reset mechanism when the voltage in the charged pixel reaches a reference voltage. During the global exposure time each individual pixel can be self-reset several times, depending on the intensity of the radiation incident upon it. At the end of the global exposure time, each pixel contains only the “residual value” of voltage that remains from the last individual self-reset to the end of the global integration time. An algorithm is implemented, which estimates and determines the number of resets undergone by each pixel during the global exposure time. From this number of resets the algorithm is able to reconstruct the true image.

  • Publication number: 20080131022
Abstract: A method and apparatus for enhancing the resolution of digital images. For each image a white balanced image is generated, which takes into account the differences in the colors of the sensor cell upon which the values are generated. Edge detection filters are then activated on the white balanced image and a weight is determined, indicating the probability that a feature which was detected as an edge is indeed an edge. At the last step, each detected edge is multiplied by the probability and is added to the luminance component, thus enhancing the edges. Preferred embodiments of the white balance image generation. Generating the white balanced image, detecting the edges and determining the weights are disclosed for sensors operating in Line Addition On mode and for sensors operating in Line Addition Off mode.
