  • Patent number: 5857147
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for controlling the data rates for communications to and from a base station and a plurality of remote users. The usage of the communications resource whether the forward link resource (from base station to remote users) or reverse link resource (from remote users to base station) is measured. The measured usage value is compared against at least one predetermined threshold value and the data rates of communications or a subset of communications on said communications resource is modified in accordance with said comparisons.

  • Patent number: 5848063
Abstract: In a communications network, a network user communicates through a remote unit with another user via at least one base station. The communications network includes a first mobile switching center which controls communications through a first set of base stations including a first base station. The remote unit stores a list of active base stations which has an entry corresponding to each base station with which active communication is established. The first base station has an entry on the list of active base stations. The first base station measures a round trip delay of an active communication signal between the first base station and the remote unit. A handoff of the active communication signal is initiated if the round trip delay of the active communication exceeds a threshold if the first base station is designated as a reference base station.

  • Patent number: 5844899
Abstract: To provide an unique call ID number in a system comprised of a plurality of entities through which a connection may be established, each entity through which a connection can be initiated is capable of assigning a unique number to a new connection. For example a first entity receives a first request to initiate a first connection and assigns a first unique number to said first connection. The first unique number comprises the identity of the first entity, a time at which the first request was received, a distinction of the first request from any other request received at the first entity in a time block during which said first request was received, and an indication of a system with which the first entity is associated.

  • Patent number: 5710768
Abstract: An integrated search processor used in a modem for a spread spectrum communications system buffers receive samples and utilizes a time sliced transform processor operating on successive offsets from the buffer. The search processor autonomously steps through a search as configured by a microprocessor specified search parameter set, which can include the group of antennas to search over, the starting offset and width of the search window to search over, and the number of Walsh symbols to accumulate results at each offset. The search processor calculates the correlation energy at each offset, and presents a summary report of the best paths found in the search to use for demodulation element reassignment. The search is done in a linear fashion independent of the probability that a signal being searched for was transmitted at any given time.

  • Patent number: 5544223
Abstract: A method and apparatus for paging a concentrated subscriber system for wireless local loop within a cellular telephone system. Within a mobile telephone switching office (MTSO) a visitor location register is generated in which a subscriber unit identification number (SUIN) for every subscriber unit registered within the area of coverage is stored along with corresponding telephone number, last cell site, and concentrated subscriber system (CSS) status information. The SUIN can correspond to the electronic serial number (ESN), mobile identification number (MIN), or other unique identification code assigned to each subscriber unit. When a call directed to a subscriber unit having a particular telephone number is received the corresponding SUIN, CSS status information, and last cell site information of that subscriber unit are determined using the visitor location directory.

  • Patent number: 5490165
Abstract: In a receiver having a plurality of demodulation elements, a method of assigning the plurality of demodulation element so a set of available signals. A first method emphasizes diversity of transmitting devices so that power control is optimal. A second method emphasizes the maximum signal strength available to produce aggregate maximum signal strength. Both methods control the number of reassignments so that excessive data is not lost during the reassignment process. The apparatus comprises the plurality of demodulation elements, at least one searcher element, and a controller.

  • Patent number: 5396516
Abstract: In a communication system in which direct sequence spread spectrum modulation techniques are used interference is generated in communications by remote stations since the communications share the same frequency spectrum. In order to increase system capacity the power level of the remote station transmitters are controlled by the local station. A setpoint is generated by the local station and compared with the remote station signal strength measured at the local station. The result of this comparison is used to generate power level adjustment commands which are sent to the remote station. The remote station is responsive to the power level adjustment commands for increasing or decreasing remote station transmitter power. In a spread spectrum communication system in which data is encoded at variable data rates, the local station determines the rate at which received data was encoded by the transmitting remote station.
