  • Patent number: 4047855
Abstract: An improved slant axis rotary mechanism of the type including a housing defining a chamber having a radially outer spherical wall and a radially inner spherical wall interconnected by opposed, generally radially extending side walls. A shaft is journalled within the housing and has an angularly offset portion within the chamber. A rotor is within the chamber and journalled on the angularly offset portion. The mechanism is provided with an improved cooling system including a plurality of coolant receiving conduits in the walls in close proximity to the chamber. A thin, wear resistant layer is disposed on the walls within the chamber and interiorly of the conduits. The conduits are located closely adjacent the intersections of the side walls and the spherical walls to provide excellent cooling.

  • Patent number: 4015728
Abstract: An improved hydraulic actuator for use as a swing motor in a material handling apparatus of the type having a vehicle mounted boom. Two embodiments are disclosed and each includes a vertically disposed, double-acting cylinder having an internal, vertically reciprocal piston. The cylinder may be disposed between yoke arms mounting a boom and provision is made for securing the cylinder to the vehicle frame. A coupling device is secured to one of the yoke arms and has a first splined surface while means are carried by the piston and movable therewith and include a second splined surface slidably engaging the first splined surface.

  • Patent number: 3989424
Abstract: An improved ported mechanism such as an engine, compressor or the like. The mechanism includes a housing defining a chamber and a liner is disposed within the housing and supported thereby to define the chamber walls. Coolant passages extend between the housing and the liner and a piston is movable within the chamber. A port receiving opening is located in the housing and a port in the liner is provided and includes a tubular element extending from the liner into the opening. A fluid-impervious heat transfer impeding structure is exteriorly of and surrounds the tubular element and is disposed within the opening. A flexible seal is in the opening and interposed between the housing and the heat transfer impeding device so that the seal prevents leakage at the port and the impeding device prevents rapid deterioration of the seal.

  • Patent number: 3988078
Abstract: A rotary mechanism including a housing defining a chamber including an operating cavity, a shaft journalled by the housing, and a rotor within the chamber and journalled on the shaft, the rotor having a plurality of apices on one side thereof. There is a plurality of apex seal-receiving grooves in the rotor, one at each apex, and at least one peripheral seal-receiving groove in a different surface of the rotor and intersecting the apex seal-receiving grooves. The mechanism includes a plurality of elongated apex seals, one at each apex seal-receiving groove, and each apex seal has a first groove in an end thereof in substantial alignment with the peripheral seal-receiving groove and a second groove opening into the corresponding apex seal-receiving groove. Peripheral seals are disposed in the peripheral seal-receiving groove and extended therealong substantially to the first grooves in the apex seal ends.

  • Patent number: 3972658
Abstract: An improved slant axis rotary mechanism such as an engine, pump, or the like. The same includes a housing defining an operating chamber having a radially outer spherical surface, a radially inner spherical surface, and opposed end surfaces extending between the spherical surfaces. The housing includes half shells carrying the outer spherical surface, each of which has spaced, radially inwardly opening grooves flanking the outer spherical surface. The housing also includes a pair of end wall members, each carrying one of the end surfaces and part of the inner spherical surface and the periphery of the end wall members is disposed in a corresponding one of the grooves in the half shells. Means are provided for securing the half shells together. A shaft is journalled in the end wall members and has an angularly offset portion within the chamber. A rotor having a peripheral flange within the chamber is journalled on the angularly offset portion.
