Patent number: 6328240Abstract: The present invention relates to a fishing reel that has a variable brake mechanism. The variable brake mechanism includes a plurality of small brake weights mounted on radially extending shafts. The brake weights are positioned within a brake race that is fixed to the fishing reel body. The brake weights are further configured to rotate about a spool shaft with the spool about which fishing line is wound. Upon rotation of the spool, the brake weights are urged radially outward due to centrifugal forces. The brake weights further formed with collars that extend through an opening in a cam collar. The openings in the cam collar define cam surfaces which, upon rotation of the cam collar with respect to the spool, urge the brake weights into and away from a position where the weights may contact the brake race. An adjuster dial accessible from the outer surface of the fishing reel body is configured to selectively engage the cam collar for rotation of the cam collar.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2000Date of Patent: December 11, 2001Assignee: Shimano, Inc.Inventors: Noboru Sakaguchi, Ong San Cheng

Patent number: 5586734Abstract: A spinning reel has a rotor mounted forwardly of a reel body, and an anti-reverse mechanism for preventing the rotor from rotating in a line unwinding direction. The anti-reverse mechanism includes teeth formed on an element rotatable with the rotor, and a stopper engageable with the teeth. When a force is applied to the rotor in the line unwinding direction, a brake mechanism applies a braking force to rotation of the rotor through a one-way clutch mechanism while allowing the rotation until the stopper engages one of the teeth. The anti-reverse mechanism also includes a switching member operable to switch the stopper between a position engageable with the teeth and a position retracted from the teeth. A release mechanism cancels the braking force in response to an operation the switching member to retract the stopper from the teeth.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1995Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: Shimano Inc.Inventors: Yuzo Kawabe, Noboru Sakaguchi

Patent number: 5524832Abstract: A spinning reel includes a reel body, a rotor attached to the reel body to be rotatable relative thereto, and a bail supported by the rotor to be switchable between a line releasing position and a line winding position. The rotor supports a switch arm for switching the bail from the line winding position to the line releasing position. A rotation stopper is provided to stop rotation of the rotor in response to an operation of the switch arm to switch the bail to the line releasing position.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1994Date of Patent: June 11, 1996Assignee: Shimano Inc.Inventor: Noboru Sakaguchi
