The fuel injection valve is cooled through a seal portion of the fuel injection valve gasket, by cooling water in contact with the bottom surface of the cylinder head through the water hole.

The angle “&thgr;” satisfies the inequality of “&thgr;°<&thgr;≦15°”. If desired, the imaginary plane may be replaced with another imaginary plane which includes a center line of an associated fuel injector and extends in parallel with the center line of the associated piston.

    Abstract: A piston for a cylinder direct injection spark ignition internal combustion engine mounted on an automotive vehicle. The piston comprises a piston head including a protruded section which is protruded from a standard horizontal plane which is perpendicular to a center axis of the piston. The protruded section has a cavity whose periphery forms a generally circular ridgeline, and an inclined surface formed outside the ridgeline and extending toward a periphery of the piston head. The inclined surface continuously slopes down in a direction from the ridgeline to the periphery of the piston. The inclined surface forms an angle (.theta.1) ranging from 10 to 60.degree. relative to the standard horizontal plane. The cavity has a depth (A) within a range of from 3 to 9 mm which depth is an axial distance between a bottom surface of the cavity and the standard horizontal plane of the piston.

The piston includes a cavity combustion chamber at the top surface of the piston, the cavity combustion chamber having a round shape and an increasing cross sectional area as the top of the piston is approached. During stratified charge combustion, swirl flow is smoothly guided into the cavity combustion chamber and preserved with a sufficient intensity since the cavity combustion chamber is well sealed at its whole periphery. During homogeneous charge combustion, a tumble flow is formed inside the cylinder, and fuel injection is made in the intake stroke. Fuel supplied into the cavity combustion chamber is easily washed away by the tumble stream.

    Abstract: A cylinder direct injection spark-ignition internal combustion engine. The engine comprises a cylinder block having a plurality of cylinders. A cylinder head is fixedly mounted on a block deck of the cylinder block. The cylinder head has an intake port for each cylinder. The intake port has first and second sections which are contiguous with each other. The first section is located downstream of the second section relative to the flow of intake air. The first and second sections have respectively first and second axes. The first and second axes incline relative to a bottom flat surface of the cylinder head respectively to form first and second angles, in which the first angle is smaller than the second angle. A fuel injector valve is provided to directly inject fuel into a combustion chamber formed corresponding to each cylinder. The fuel injector valve is located close to the intake port and disposed closer to a periphery of the combustion chamber than a downstream end of the intake port.
